The National Heritage Administration (NHA) is a federal government agency in Nouvelle Alexandrie responsible for protecting, promoting, and managing the nation's cultural heritage. It was established in 1689 AN as part of the New Prosperity Plan's cultural preservation, development, and restoration projects. It is currently under the jurisdiction of the Department of Education, Culture, and Sports. The NHA is headed by the Director of Cultural Heritage, a position appointed by the King on advice of the Premier. It has a staff of over 5,000 employees including archaeologists, historians, architects, curators, and security personnel. Its annual budget is approximately NAX€625 million (1729 AN).
Duties
The core duties of the NHA are:
- Maintaining the official registry of national heritage sites, which includes over 800 buildings, monuments, artworks, and natural areas of cultural significance.
- Enforcing laws and regulations around protecting heritage sites from damage, looting, or unapproved modifications.
- Managing the preservation, restoration, and public exhibition of artifacts and antiquities in national museums and galleries.
- Promoting cultural heritage through educational programs, public events, and media outreach.
- Providing technical assistance and issuing permits to archaeological excavations and research activities across the country.
- Administering the Cultural Heritage Preservation Program.
