Kipei Prefecture is one of the twenty-one prefectures of Sanpantul. It is located in the eastern part of Sanpantul and borders the Captive Sea. Although its mainland is 881 km2, it has eight small islands and a relatively large island called Namishima (Nami Island). The capital of the prefecture is the city bearing its name, and since the city of Kipei is also the capital of Sanpantul, special administrative units are located in this prefecture. Kipei also lies within the Eto Subprefecture, which covers the eastern part of the island. Kipei prefecture has a population of 5,423,124 and is the most populous prefecture in the nation.
The prefecture was first established in 1674 as Quipei Province. In 1778, it was named Kipei Province. In 1681, after the inclusion of Arato and the change of provincial autonomy, it became Kipei Prefecture. Kipei Prefecture mainly consists of the Special Wards of Kipei, Arato, Deto, Uku-shu, Tappu and Kita. Uku-shu was previously a separate province called Ukushu, but was later integrated into the territory. Although mainly Sanpos live in Kipei, it is possible to come across people from different nationalities.
