Karl Magnusson (born 1701 AN) is a New Alexandrian economist and central banker who has served as President of the Infrastructure Development Bank (IDB) since 1754 AN. He came to the bank after a career at the Federal Bank of Nouvelle Alexandrie (FBNA), where he rose to Deputy Governor.

Early life and education

Magnusson was born in 1701 AN in Pharos, New Luthoria, into a family of the region's long-established Norse community, which had settled there generations before the refugee movements of the late 1730s. He studied economics at the University of Cárdenas and completed graduate work in monetary economics. He speaks Norse, Alexandrian, and Martino.

Career

Magnusson joined the Federal Bank of Nouvelle Alexandrie early in his career and spent most of it in bank supervision and monetary policy. He served as Deputy Governor of the FBNA, a tenure that covered the regional banking strains of the late 1740s and the property-securities crisis of the early 1750s. The experience gave him a working knowledge of the Federation's prudential machinery and of the regional lenders whose distress drove both episodes.

He was appointed President of the Infrastructure Development Bank of Nouvelle Alexandrie in 1754 AN. At the bank he has held to a conservative line on the IDB's balance sheet, tightening the revenue tests that projects must meet before the bank will sponsor a special purpose vehicle. The discipline was tested in 1757 AN, when the bank arranged and underwrote the reconstruction bond that funded part of the Cajamarca reconstruction and managed the IDB's exposure to projects whose financing had been built on Alexandrium royalty income that fell away in the market crash of that year.

His earlier service at the FBNA and his record at the IDB have placed Magnusson among the figures discussed as a potential successor to Governor Lucienne Martel when she retires from the Federal Bank of Nouvelle Alexandrie.
