The Lanyitali Kalisa (Guard of the Union in Sanaman) is the national gendarmerie force of Sanama. It was formed in 1702 by merging the Kalisa Rrumëli and Kalisa Sivile and changed to its current name in 1707. Formerly a branch of the armed services, then a civilian agency, in 1749 it was again reformed into a military gendarmerie.. It is subordinate to and reports to the Ministry of Public Safety of the union government. It carries out domestic policing duties in accordance with law, often in rural areas. Its merger with the Kalisa Sivile put all general national law enforcement under the same agency, with the LK now also handling warrants and national criminal investigations. The Lanyitali Kalisa is the principal law enforcement agency in the Sanaman Antarctic Territory and has a supervisory role in Semisa City. In addition to those duties, the LK also handles national criminal investigations all over Sanama as well as assist regional and local agencies. Since 1709 primary law enforcement is carried out by agencies under the people's republics. The LK since then functions as the national law enforcement agency, as well as assisting the regional police forces. There are also several specialised law enforcement agencies on the national level. The LK can be transferred to the Ministry of Defence in times of war, or otherwise as directed by the President of the Union.
