The Kalisa Lanyitali (Guard of the Union in Sanaman) is the national gendarmerie force of Sanama. It was formed in 1702 by merging the Kalisa Rrumëli and Kalisa Sivile and changed to its current name in 1707. Formerly a branch of the armed services, the Kalisa is now a civilian agency, albeit with a military structure. It is subordinate to and reports to the Ministry of the Interior of the union government. It carries out domestic policing duties in accordance with law, often in rural areas. Its merger with the Kalisa Sivile put all general national law enforcement under the same agency, with the KL now also handling warrants and national criminal investigations. The Kalisa Lanyitali is the principal law enforcement agency in the Sanaman Antarctic Territory and has a supervisory role in Semisa City. In addition to those duties, the KL also handles national criminal investigations all over Sanama as well as assist regional and local agencies. Since 1709 primary law enforcement is carried out by agencies under the people's republics. The KL since then functions as the national law enforcement agency, as well as assisting the regional police forces.
