Jessdenkmal

The Jessdenkmal (Common Tongue: Jess Monument) is a monument situated near the tripoint of Francia, Benacia and Elwynn, in Francia. It stands on a densely forested Grotenberg, a hill with a height of 386 m in the Grotenberg Wald (Grotenberg forest).

Construction on the monument began on 3 VIII 1674 and was completed on 13 XI 1674.

Background

The ambitions of His Majesty Arkadius Frederik Gustavus des Vinandy to sit on the Golden Mango Throne are no secret. He had often spoken to his military advisers about a march to Shirekeep. But with the division of Mishalan, Elwynn blocked access to the Elwynn River. The river can be seen in clear weather from the hill near the tripoint in the Grotenberg Wald.

When the story of his dream became publicly known, Arkadius commissioned the construction of the monument. “Let this be a visible sign for everyone that the advance to Shirekeep, to the Golden Mango Throne, is not a fleeting idea. But as steadfast as these stones and this metal." - Arkadius said at the unveiling. This ambition was later incorporated in the Constitution of Francia.

Description

The monument rises a total of 53.44 m. The statue accounts for 24.82 m (including the sword). Pedestal and base of the statue make up the difference. The statue was made from around 200 copper plates riveted together and supported by an iron frame. The copper weighs an estimated 11.8 metric tons. The pedestal is made of local sandstone, quarried on the hill nearby.

The statue faces towards Shirekeep. The subject has a body shape which the designer considered to be "typically Amokolian". The right arm holds the sword pointing upward. The left is supported by a large shield. The wings on the helm wanted to show the eagle as a heraldic symbol of Brandenburg.
