Gjanluigi Vinfetto (born 1649 in Santo Cretomano) is a Cisamarrese politician, novelist and general, and was the first President of Cisamarra from independence in 1700 to his deposition in 1717.
Joined the Imperial Shirerithian Forces as a sixteen-year old cadet, and was commissioned on his 18th birthday into the II Corps. Fought in the Auspicious Occasion (1651), received a medal of valour for saving ten of his comrades from near-certain death from an attack by the Vanic Temple Guard. Active in the War of Caskets (1656) and other skirmishes in the Warring Islands (1657). Led a monitoring mission during the Humanist Counterrevolution in Modan and Malarboria in 1660. Became a teacher of new army cadets at the Imperial Academy in Mortis Mercatoria in 1661, and was remembered by alumni as a charismatic "but somewhat crazy" teacher. He prided himself of leading the class ("countering guerrilla warfare") with the lowest grade-point average of all classes in the Imperial Academy, and he told whomsoever would listen that was a testament to the difficulty of topic that he had the honour of teaching. He stayed on in the Academy there until 1671, when he realized his new-found Sanaman patriotism, and defected from the Imperial Forces to the Sanilla and Amarra Liberation Army for Democracy. He was stationed, on his own request, in his native Cisamarra.
Following Sanaman independence, Gjanluigi Vinfetto had hoped to receive the position of minister of defence in the new government, but he was "only" promoted to Shenerel Lutenen. As such, he remained in the Army. However, at this point, he also began writing a series of Cisamarrese-language novels, the Contra il Vanecismo series, about the Auspicious Occasion, in which we follow a myriad of characters on both sides of the conflict. While critics were divided on the literary merits of the books – some argued they were genial, others were confused about the unique style of metaphors and the flatness of characters – he became famous among the Cisamarrese public. His books, originally published in 1672, 1673, and 1674, were quickly translated to Sanaman, Istvanistani, and even Elw (though in Elwynn they never did sell well). He was part of the reality programme "I'm a celebrity, get me out of here" in 1675, after which point the young generation became his biggest supporters.
Married to Maria Amalia, née Scoljittano (born 1653), with whom he has three children Carolina (1678), Amadeo (1681), and Gjuseppe (1685).
