The CF-129 is a high-wing, twin-engine monoplane with struts, featuring an all-metal airframe, dual vertical stabilizers, and a tricycle fixed landing gear. In the event of engine failure, a spoiler ahead of the aileron on the opposite wing deploys automatically. This mechanism restricts the wing drop to 12° within five seconds instead of the usual 30°.
The aircraft is designed for Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) and can perform well in high-altitude and hot conditions. Aerodynamically activated leading-edge slats help achieve a low stall speed of 119 km/h. Although its certification specifies a landing field length of 500 m, it has demonstrated landings in as short as 156 m. The aircraft's inlet air ducts feature inertial separators, and the inverted engine configuration, along with the high-wing design, protects the engines and propellers from foreign object damage, making it suitable for operations on unprepared runways.
The CF-129 offers several configurations: a 19-passenger airliner with 2-1 seating and an underbelly luggage pod, a cargo version with a 700 kg hand-cranked hoist option, the common combi version, a VIP transport, a medevac setup for six litters and seven seats, a search-and-rescue model, a 17-seat paratrooper drop variant, an 18-passenger utility cabin, and an aerial firefighting version. A crew of two can convert between passenger and cargo configurations in just 7 minutes. The rear doors open inward, facilitating cargo drops, utility operations, and passenger boarding.
The aircraft can take off in 550 m at its maximum takeoff weight of 7,500 kg. It has a maximum payload capacity of 2,300 kg, and can transport 2,300 kg over 190 km or 1,100 kg with full fuel over 1,300 km.
