Autocephalous Nazarene Church of Alexandria/Meta
About this church (OOC)
The Autocephalous Nazarene Church of Alexandria is a fictional religious institution created for Alexandria and its successor states. It serves as the primary faith tradition for the Alexandrian people across Micras, functioning narratively as the established church of the former Alexandrian Empire and a major cultural institution for the Alexandrian diaspora.
Real-world inspirations
The church draws primarily from the Roman Catholic Church, borrowing its hierarchical structure (Archbishop/Cardinals/Bishops/Priests), territorial organization (provinces/dioceses/parishes), and many governance mechanisms (the Sacred College, curial departments, conclaves for papal elections). The term "autocephalous" comes from Eastern Orthodox ecclesiology, referring to a self-governing church not subject to external authority. This was adopted to reflect the church's post-imperial independence after Alexandria's collapse.
The founding legend of St. Natsanet provides an in-universe origin for scripture that avoids directly copying real-world religious history while maintaining familiar Nazarene theological content. The "Holy Scripture" she receives (Psalms, Proverbs, Gospel, Revelations) gestures toward biblical content without requiring detailed canonical development. The Creed of St. Natsanet is explicitly the Nicene Creed under an in-universe name.
Doctrine
Doctrinally, the church is intentionally left somewhat vague to avoid theological debates that would distract from gameplay. The broad strokes are:
- Trinitarian theology: Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit
- Apostolic succession: Authority passed down from St. Natsanet through the Four Patriarchs to present bishops
- Sacramental practice: Baptism, communion, and other rites (not fully enumerated)
- Episcopal polity: Bishops govern territorial jurisdictions; the Archbishop of Geneva holds primacy
The church's relationship to real-world Christianity is deliberately ambiguous. It uses Nazarene terminology and worships Jesus Christ, but its founding narrative (St. Natsanet receiving scripture on an alien planet) places it outside real-world sacred history. This allows players to engage with familiar religious aesthetics and institutional dynamics without requiring theological precision or risking offense.
Terminology conventions
The term "Nazarene" replaces "Christian" in most contexts, deriving from "Nazareth" (Jesus's hometown). This avoids overusing a heavily loaded real-world term while maintaining clear reference to Christ-centered faith.
Use "Nazarene" for:
- The faith tradition: "Alexandrian Nazarene Church," "Nazarene communities"
- Adherents: "Nazarene faithful," "Nazarenes"
- Theological positions: "Nazarene doctrine," "Nazarene ethics"
Use "Christ" and derivatives for:
- Direct references to Jesus: "Jesus Christ," "Christ's teachings"
- Theological terms derived from his name: "christological," "christology"
- Descriptions of Christ-like qualities: "Christian charity" (meaning Christ-like charity)
Notes
- Worldbuilding notes:
- Christian = Nazarene; use the term "Christian" only when it refers to Christ or something being Christ-like. The uses of "Christ," "christological," and "Jesus Christ" are appropriate since they refer directly to the person of Christ.
