The Commonwealth of Aurora is one of several provinces in the Holy Ralgon Empire. Specifically, it is part of the constitutent country of Drag'os, which occupies the whole island that Aurora sits on. This province is a recent addition to the Holy Ralgon Empire in name only; it split off from the existing ancient province of Stormhold in 1675. Before this time, the province was a part of the massive district known as Eastern Stormhold, which included the vast metropolis of Glacier City and its environs. As the Holy Ralgon Empire began to consolidate continued expansions to the west and overseas, the question of autonomy for this province as well as its neighboring city (as massive as it was) was always in the collective minds of the Ralgon Senate. In 1675, the province of Stormhold agreed to split itself into three parts: Stormhold proper (governed out of the recently renamed city of Valeria), the Glacier City semi-autonomous region, and the Province of Aurora.
Most of the population lives on the coast. Aside from the capital of Mashiro to the east, most of the province's population are included in the Glacier City metropolitan region. About half the coastal regions on the eastern side of Aurora are part of this vast conurbation, only separated by a mountainous border on Glacier City's northern regions. A break in the short mountain range (after which it becomes a group of seamounts offshore) allowed the population to spill over into what is now Aurora province. Due to the small space in this gap, it is used mainly as infrastructure that facilitates transport between the city and the western suburbs that spread throughout this region (while, mostly thorugh happenstance, avoiding Nixtorm due to the rough terrain).
Most of eastern Drag'os's financial industries are located in Aurora. While Drag'nor is still considered the financial capital of the Holy Ralgon Empire, Aurora certainly takes a solid second place due to its regional importance. Generally speaking, the Aurora province is, mostly for this region, considered the center of the nation's upper middle class. To the west of the provincial capital of Mashiro, however, Aurora is sparsely populated, creating the very cultural gaps that necessitated the split of the original Greater Stormhold political division into several smaller entities.
