Anarchy (from Greek αναρχία anarchía, "without ruler") is the belief that rulers are unnecessary and should be abolished.

Anarchy refers to various political philosophies and social movements that advocate the elimination of any authoritarian structure--usually the State, but sometimes other groups like the church, corporations, or the military. In place of centralized political structures, these movements instead focus on voluntary and non-hierarchical structures of autonomy.

While anarchy is defined by what it is against, anarchists also offer differing positive visions of what they believe to be a truly free society. The word "anarchy," as anarchists use it, does not imply chaos, but rather a harmonious ruler-less society. However, ideas about how an anarchist society might work vary considerably, especially with respect to economics. Also, there is disagreement about how a free society might be brought about.
