The People's Republic of Hell is a former micronation founded by WarVoid in July of 2000 in response to the collapse of Audentior. The forums had been an earlier project by WarVoid known as the Republic of Antarctica, although the nation never gained any people. Inspired by a satirical take on "hell freezes over", WarVoid secretly remodeled Antarctica into the now-infamous PRH. The secrecy of the PRH's creation and its stance against the Flying Islands of Jasonia, which was set to dominate the Apollo Sector after the fall of the AIN, led it to gain some citizens and notoriety. Armed with a barrage of bad puns the PRH then led a cold war with the FIoJ which very nearly resulted in an actual war, sometimes called the Infernal War, although no shots were actually fired. The two sides eventually reconciled their differences leading to the founding of the Union of Apollo States, and the PRH was eventually disbanded.

Government

The PRH was a communist police state with the Premier of Darkness as the ruler. Despite this, the actual government was in practice quite liberal. The upper legislature was a Politburo composed of regional commissars from the Infernal Socialist Republics. A lower legislature known as the Lemure Council was accessible to all citizens.

Each ministry had a pun-inspired name, such as the interior ministry (Commissariat of Evil Influence), the economic ministry (Commissariat of Plunder), ministry of defense (Commissariat of Doom), research (Commissariat of Death's Design), etc.

Like a true communist state, it had a single ruling party, known as EVIL - The Evil and Vile International League.

It's secret service and intelligence agency was known as the Society of Fallen Angels.

History

The fictional history of the PRH was, according to myth, recorded in the manuscript known as The Dagoran Chronicles. This manuscript has never been found, but references are made to it throughout Infernal culture.

According to popular legend, the PRH was started by a group of rebellious demons who, being sentenced by Satan to a remote corner of Hell to mine a new 667th layer, were eventually trapped by a cataclysm that cut off the layer from the rest of Hell. The demons, along with their charges of damned souls, were thus isolated in the series of dungeons, tunnels and caverns that would become known as Neo Infernia. The demons then spent years populating the caverns and connecting them with tunnels and dungeons. This eventually led to them accidentally mining a tunnel to the surface that was revealed to be Micras. Around this gate they built the great city of Dagora that would eventually become the capital of the PRH.

Culture

The PRH was an explicitly tongue-in-cheek country. The name itself is a contradiction, as people typically destined for Hell are not assumed to be granted any rights by the Devil, thus the idea of a communal state formed a paradox. Likewise, the institutions of the state were often puns or parodies of common elements from horror movies and common conceptions of hell. The game Dungeon Keeper was also popular at the time and served as a strong influence in that it, too, also parodied the genre.

A longterm cultural impact was that it gave birth to the Shirerithian expression of surprise, "What the PRH?".

The graphics of the PRH were a milestone in design, and are still visited from time to time by a cult following. The forums made heavy use of animated graphics, flaming text, and dark color schemes, setting a precedent for later micronations to design more thorough forum skins.

Geography

Infernal Tunnels

The PRH never officially held land on Micras, although it was often associated with Dragonis in Treesia (as of 2014 this is Craitland) where they were said to have access to the overworld. In its custom of defying the standards of the day, the PRH refused to hold land on Micras and instead insisted on existing as an underground state living in tunneled dungeons beneath the surface that were said to have criss-crossed much of Micras (the Evermurk) . At one point much later the PRH held a protracted recwar with Karnali in which the Infernals emerged from various volcanic tunnels onto Keltia.
