Maria Teresa Motochanchi (Maria Teresa Isabel Motochanchi y de los Rios, b. 16.XII.1658 AN) is a New Alexandrian teacher and politician. Motochanchi currently serves as the Leader of the Opposition and the interim leader of the Social Democratic & Liberal Alliance of Nouvelle Alexandrie since 1713 AN. She serves as a Social Democrat Deputy in the Federal Assembly representing the Wechua Nation, serving since 1695 AN. Prior to that, she served as the first female Mayor of the city of Parap for the last three years of Mayor Joseph Quisque Jr.'s four year term (1690 AN-1693 AN), exiting office riding popularity ratings as high as 92% (1694 AN).

Biography

Born in the city of Parap, Wechua Nation on 16.XII.1658 AN, Maria Teresa Isabel Motochanchi y de los Rios is the daughter of Manuel Motochanchi, Jr., a teacher and union organizer, and Isabella de los Rios, the eldest daughter of Felipe de los Rios. During the Wechua Sorrow, the Motochanchis took up arms as part of their neighborhood's local home-grown defense committees as chaos engulfed the country in the Keltian Green. When the Sapa Wechua returned to lead the Wechua Restoration in 1673 AN, Manuel Motochanchi, Jr. was appointed to serve as Deputy Minister of Defense in the new government.

As a child, Motochanchi was exposed to the political and social issues of the time and was heavily influenced by her parents' activism. She attended the University of Saint-Michel in Parap, Wechua Nation, where she studied education and political science, graduating with honors. After graduation, Motochanchi began her career as a teacher, working in various schools throughout the Wechua Nation. She taught in the cities of Roanne, Ancash, and Rimarima before returning to Parap in 1686 AN, where she taught language arts and humanities in several high schools around the city.

Parap special mayoral election of 1690

In the local mayoral elections of 1690 AN, Motochanchi made history by becoming the first female Mayor of the Wechua regional capital city of Parap. The special election was triggered by the resignation of the previous Mayor, Joseph Quisque Jr., who was embroiled in a personally embarrassing scandal. Quisque Jr. had been an independent Mayor and his tenure was marked by low approval ratings among the residents of Parap.

Quisque Jr. had been the Mayor of Parap for over a decade, and during his tenure, he had made a number of enemies. He was known for his brash and combative style, and many felt that he was more interested in consolidating power than in serving the needs of the community. Despite this, he had managed to win re-election several times, thanks in part to his ability to control the local media and to use his political influence to suppress opposition. However, in early 1690 AN, a local news outlet managed to obtain and publish a series of text messages and emails that revealed Quisque Jr. had been involved in a long-term extramarital affair with a city employee. The scandal was particularly embarrassing because Quisque Jr. had campaigned heavily on family values and had often criticized his opponents for their personal moral shortcomings. The revelation of the affair led to widespread outrage and calls for Quisque Jr.'s resignation. He initially refused to step down, but as the scandal continued to dominate headlines and as more and more of his allies deserted him, he was eventually forced to resign.

Motochanchi campaigned on a platform of reform and improving the lives of working-class residents. She promised to build new schools and community centers, increase access to affordable housing, and create job training programs. Her message resonated with the people of Parap, and she won the special election by a wide margin.

Mayor of Parap

Once in office, Motochanchi wasted no time in implementing her campaign promises. She oversaw the construction of several new schools and community centers, which provided much-needed resources and opportunities for the residents of Parap. She also implemented a number of policies aimed at increasing access to affordable housing, such as offering incentives to developers who built low-income housing and creating a city-run housing assistance program. In addition, she launched several job training programs to help residents acquire the skills they needed to find good-paying jobs. Motochanchi's efforts to improve the lives of the people of Parap were met with widespread approval. Her approval ratings soared, reaching as high as 92% by the time she left office three years later in 1693 AN.

During her tenure as Mayor of Parap, Motochanchi faced a number of controversies. One of the most notable was around the issue of affordable housing in Parap, which had long been a problem in the city. Despite her efforts to increase access to affordable housing, many residents felt that her policies fell short of addressing the root causes of the problem, mainly that her administration was not doing enough to prevent the displacement of low-income homeowners by developers. Another scandal that temporarily tarnished her reputation, was the expansion of the ParaMETRO, Parap's city-wide public subway system. The project that was plagued by accusations of mismanagement, cost overruns, and waste of public funds. The project, which was meant to connect several poor areas of the city to the transport infrastructure, was initially praised for its ambitious goals and potential to create jobs and stimulate economic growth. However, as the project progressed, it became clear that there were serious issues with the way it was being run. An internal investigation revealed that the project was plagued by lack of oversight, poor communication between different departments and a lack of transparency in the use of public funds. Despite the scandal, Motochanchi and her team were able to recover, by taking immediate actions and implementing new measures to ensure greater accountability and transparency. She was able to regain the trust of the public, and exited office with sky-high approval ratings.

Motochanchi was expected to run for re-election as Mayor of Parap in the upcoming elections of 1693 AN, where she could secure her first full term of four years. However, to the surprise of many, she chose to not run for re-election. She instead endorsed her sister, Jacqueline Motochanchi, as her successor. Jacqueline Motochanchi was able to succeed her sister, beating former Mayor Joseph Quisque Jr. by 11 percentage points in what was considered the most brutal and negative election campaign in Nouvelle Alexandrie history.

Deputy of the Federal Assembly

Motochanchi left the Mayor's Office and decided to run for the Federal Assembly in 1693 AN and was elected to represent the Wechua Nation. Since then, she has been a vocal advocate for progressive policies, such as universal healthcare, affordable housing, and workers' rights. She has also been a vocal critic of corruption and corporate influence in politics.

Rivalry with Premier Julio Delgado

Despite Motochanchi's reputation as a charismatic leader and a champion of the working class, she has long had a personal rivalry with the former President of the Government and former leader of the SDLA, Julio Delgado. Motochanchi has privately blamed Delgado for the party's poor performance in recent elections, particularly the crushing defeat at the hands of the center-right Federal Humanist Party in 1713 AN. She has accused Delgado of being out of touch with the needs and concerns of the working class and of failing to properly mobilize the party's base.

During her term as a Deputy under the leadership of Delgado, their tension came to a head when Delgado, unable to handle Motochanchi's criticism, blacklisted Motochanchi from party offices and relegated her to backbencher status. This move effectively silenced Motochanchi and kept her from being able to influence the party's direction. Despite her marginalization within the national party, Motochanchi remained a popular figure among the people of the Wechua Nation and continued to be an influential voice in regional politics.

Interim Leader of the Social Democrats

In 1713 AN, Motochanchi was elected as the interim leader of the Social Democratic & Liberal Alliance of Nouvelle Alexandrie and has since become the Leader of the Opposition in the Federal Assembly. She continues to be a powerful voice for social justice and progressive change in Nouvelle Alexandrie, and is widely considered to be a powerful figure in national politics as well as in the Wechua Nation.
