LUCERNE/VRIJLAAR - today: The provisional government of Kurum Ash-Sharqia formally offered Saladin, president of New Batavia, the throne of Kurum Ash-Sharqia. This new nation seceded from New Batavia last month.
Saladin announced to accept the offer and to become Kurum Ash-Sharqia's first sultan. As president of New Batavia, he took the ceremonial role of the office very seriously. This is probably why he was asked to become sultan. Fairouz Farhani will become acting president until the next presidential elections.

LUCERNE - yesterday: IRP and SCIP agreed upon a roadmap for the secession of the English speaking governorates of New Batavia. After three marches on Broekszaal and an election victory for SCIP (South Corum Independence Party), the cabinet agreed to start negotiations on resolving the issue peacefully. Referenda will be held in every governorate on the question of secession.
Cracks are showing in the IRP - DSB coalition. DSB strongly opposes the secession movement and resents the planned referenda. The IRP on the other hand, wishes to avoid more civil unrest. The party is confident that most governorates will choose for stability and oppose a secessionist adventure. The coalition parties agreed to leave the matter to the Majlis-ash-Shoera, but it's uncertain whether the coalition will survive.

BROEKSZAAL - today: The "Green Committee" announced to march to the city of Broekszaal in New Batavia next Sunday. The Committee unites descendants of ancient IIR-citizens, who remaind in the Green in Southern Corum. Since the restoration of the IIR and its renaming to New Batavia, they have been asking for inclusion and citizenship rights. The planned march from the Green to Broekszaal is a protest march against the silence of the cabinet on the issue.
LUCERNE - last week: Saladin was re-elected as president of New Batavia. There was only one candidate. Saladin received 87 % of the votes. He's been in office since 2010.

LUCERNE, TODAY: President Saladin signed the General Membership Treaty of the MTO into law. The President said this marks a new chapter in New Batavia's international commitment to peace and co-operation on Micras.
It's noteworthy that this treaty was not translated into Dutch. In December 2020, the Supreme Court annulled the treaty with Hurmu on the grounds that it was in English. The constitution was recently changed to allow multilateral treaties to be passed in another language. The opposition complained that the Lucerne government is more concerned with legal technicalities and bureaucracy than with the everyday life of the population in Southern Corum and those still living in The Green. SCIP demands to be taken seriously and is planning to take action.

LUCERNE, TODAY: This evening, the electoral commission announced the results of yesterday's parliamentary elections. The Islamic Revolutionary Party suffers a huge loss of 34 seats and strands at 41 seats (out of 100) in the Majlis. The leftist newcomers of the Democratic Social Movement gains 25 seats. The separatist South Corum Independence Party rises from 25 to 34 seats.
It's the first time since the Republic's restoration that a coalition government will need to be formed. The President will probably give that task to outgoing Grand Vizier Redouan van Lucerne.
Van Lucerne's IRP and Rania Lucius' DSB have a lot in common and are the most likely coalition partners. There is one issue in which they are diametrically opposed, and that is the issue of Southern Corum autonomy. With 34 % of the electorate voting for more autonomy, the IRP believes this signal is hard to ignore. The DSB, on the other hand, is firmly committed to the unity of the Republic. It is unclear how this issue will effect government formation.
