The Institute for Mathematical Models and Simulation (Alexandrian: Institut des modèles mathématiques et de simulation; Martino: Instituto de Modelos Matemáticos y Simulación, IMMS) is a research institute for theoretical mathematics, computational modeling, and simulation science in Cárdenas, the capital of Nouvelle Alexandrie. The IMMS provides the theoretical frameworks and proofs that support the applied sciences across the Máquina Science Park. It employs about 120 people, including 10 postgraduates from the University of Cárdenas, and is the smallest of the institutes in the park.
History
The Institute for Mathematical Models and Simulation was founded in 1712 AN as part of the consolidation of mathematical research in Cárdenas. It was created to give theoretical mathematics and simulation, increasingly important to the nation's technological and industrial development, a dedicated center. Initially housed in a modest facility within the Center for Advanced Physics Research, the institute began with a small team of mathematicians and theorists. Its early work developed mathematical models for fluid dynamics, structural stability, and economic systems in support of the larger applied institutes in the park.
In 1725 AN, the institute expanded its facilities with computational labs and simulation suites, allowing more complex modeling and collaboration with other institutes. It has never received funding on the scale of its applied counterparts.
Research
The IMMS specializes in theoretical and computational mathematics, with an emphasis on modeling and simulation. Its research is organized into five core areas:
- Pure Mathematics
- Numerical Analysis
- Dynamical Systems
- Computational Simulation
- Mathematical Physics
Major Projects over the years
- Conjetura de Tanjero - a proof in algebraic topology that resolved a long-standing problem in the classification of high-dimensional manifolds. Completed in 1718 AN.
- Marco Nacional de Simulación - a modular, open-source toolkit for multi-physics simulation, used in fluid dynamics, materials science, and climate modeling. Completed in 1722 AN.
- Proyecto Colisión - mathematical models for particle collision simulations. Completed in 1734 AN.
- Proyecto Matemáticas Económicas - stochastic models to predict economic development in relation to national policies and resource management. Completed in 1744 AN.
Layout
The IMMS occupies a compact, modern 2-hectare building with three wings.
- The Main Building houses the administrative offices, lecture halls, and a specialized mathematics library.
- The Theoretical Mathematics Wing is an open-plan space with collaborative work areas for researchers in abstract mathematics.
- The Computational Simulation Wing has high-performance computing clusters and visualization labs for mathematical modeling and simulation, including a dedicated 3D simulation theater.
Organization
The IMMS is overseen by a Director-General, appointed by the Federal Science & Research Council and the Department of Research and Development. The institute is structured into four research divisions, three service departments, and one executive office:
- Director-General
- Chief Operating Officer
- Department of Administration and Finance
- Department of Facilities
- Department of Public Relations and Outreach
- Deputy Director of Research
- Pure Mathematics Division
- Numerical Analysis Division
- Dynamical Systems Division
- Computational Simulation Division
- Chief Operating Officer
The institute also maintains two advisory boards:
- Scientific Advisory Council
- Industry Collaboration Board
List of (Deputy) Directors
- Dr. Elias Tanjero (1712 AN-1720 AN)
- Dr. Guillermo Martinez (1720 AN-1728 AN)
- Victor Olleros (1728 AN-1739 AN)
- Dr. Juan Bautista Nucci (1739 AN-1746 AN)
- Maria Trevisani (1746 AN-Present)
Deputy Directors
- Enrique Rios (1712 AN-1718 AN)
- Juan Miranda (1718 AN-1728 AN)
- Loretta Villalba (1728 AN-1735 AN)
- Pablo Alonso (1735 AN-1742 AN)
