After the collapse of Hatay, the city’s strategic geography shielded it from most of the raiding and banditry. The last of these sacks came just before Aerla’s independence, where it was attacked by [[Neo-Adamite]] cultists, but it was successfully driven back with great cost to the city.

Noursala was chosen as it contained a greater population and was more geographically centered than Agalore. This move led to the economy of the area booming, and the quality of life vastly improving. The city continued to grow exponentially into the 1730 ANs, with high rise office and apartment complexes dominating the skyline of the city.

Noursala (Commonspeak: Nörsale) is the capital and largest city within Aerla. It is the nation's most populous city, with around 338,000 inhabitants. The city is home to the seat of the National Assembly and the President. The city is located along the eastern end of a lake that shares the city's name, Lake Noursala.

The city is regarded as Aerla's transportation hub, containing the nation's only international airport, Noursala International Airport. The city also serves as the center of Aerla's economy and industry, serving as host to the many of the nation's top companies, such as the Noursala Military-Industrial Company and NationalBank.

History

History The area around Lake Noursala has been inhabited since the first peoples settled in the valleys of Aerla. For centuries, migratory tribes settled around the lake. Excavations conducted in the 1750 ANs revealed iron-age artifacts including pottery and tools.

The first recorded settlement in the modern area of Noursala was a Karnali-era monastery complex known as Ṭhūlōpahāḍa (lit. "Great Hill"). The monastery was built on what is now known as the Hill of Elijah, in the north of the city. After the collapse of Karnali, the monastery was abandoned and fell into disrepair.

With the rise of Hatay in the early 1500s AN, the region around Lake Noursala was incorporated into the Shahdad region. Umraist settlers cleared the ruins of the old monastery and constructed several new villages. The most prominent of these villages was Salah ad-Nour meaning "Righteous of the Light" (this name would eventually be shortened into Noursalah, leading to the modern spelling of the name). In the coming years, Salah ad-Nour would subsume the surrounding villages of Al-Haqf, Jizala, and Al-Faghada (all of which now form some of the modern bureaus of the city) to become the premiere economic center for the Central Keltian Highlands.

The city was sacked numerous times before the foundation of Aerla. The city first came under attack from a Ranentsian warlord known as "Stefan the Despot" some time in the early 1610 ANs. The area around Lake Noursala thereafter became his fiefdom until around 1617 AN, when he was driven out of the city. In the 1660 ANs the city was attacked by a roving Vanic warband, known as the Langskipvarðlið (Longship Guards), from the Storish Duchy of Østfold. Many inhabitants of the city were either slaughtered or sold into slavery. The warband only occupied the city for a few months, before heading back to Storish-held territory to the east. The city was also then attacked by the Neo-Adamites but it was successfully driven back with great cost to the city.

During the founding of the Aerla, it was decided by the new government to make Noursala the new nation's capital. This came after a debate whether or not Noursala or Agalore should become the government's new home. Noursala was chosen as it contained a greater population and was more geographically centered than Agalore. This move led to the economy of the area booming, and the quality of life vastly improving. The city continued to grow exponentially into the 1730 ANs, with high rise office and apartment complexes dominating the skyline of the city.
