The Meckelnburgh United Soccer League is the sole professional sports league for association football in Meckelnburgh, operated by the Royal Meckelnburgh Soccer Federation The league was founded in 1684 AN as a formalization of friendlies matches played between teams since 1625 AN.
The season aligns with international competitions, running from September through May (seasons are named after their concluding year). Because of the arctic weather in Meckelnburgh, games played November through March are often indoors, to avoid snow.
The league core consists of 24 coed teams in two divisions, 12 in the Premier Division and 12 in the Challenger Division, representing the largest cities in the kingdom. The league also operates eight under-21 coed teams.
Many of the best players from throughout the league are often also members of the Meckelnburgh national football team, also managed by the Royal Meckelnburgh Soccer Federation.
League format
Each team in the United Soccer League is owned and managed by the government. For most teams, the municipal authorities administer financing and facilities, with primary assistance from the Ministry of Sport & Culture, which serves to subsidize the league overall. Albioch Firebirds FK and Lunden Cardsharps SC are exceptions, funded by the Church of Meckelnburgh and the monarch respectively.
