Troy Thompson was a micronationalist best known as the first and only monarch of Slobovia, ruling that micronation as king from 2000 to 2006.
Micronational Life
In 2000, largely by accident, Thompson became involved in micronationalism after he had stumbled upon a micronation during a web search. That inspired him to create his own micronation with a group of friends, resulting in the foundation of Slobovia a few weeks later.
Thompson immediately ascended the throne as King of Slobovia and, with the backing of some of his macronational friends, primarily developed the micronation offline, due to limited Internet access on the part of the population. As ruler of Slobovia, Thompson had come to make many mistakes, many of which were committed at the League of Secessionist States, including lying about the age of the micronation during the application process to that organization.
By early 2001, Thompson had gained a poor reputation within the micronational community due to what he self-described as a lack of maturity and subsequently withdrew from participation in the community, with Slobovia collapsing in mid-2004. Following some encouragement from Emperor Edgard II of Alexandria later that year, he returned to micronationalism, co-founding the Republic of San Martin with Edgard, of which he became the vice-president. A subsequent coup d'état resulted in him being named Emperor of San Martin, but the ongoing political instability in that micronation eventually led to its dissolution and integration with Alexandria.
In 2005, Thompson re-founded Slobovia and embarked on an aggressive diplomatic campaign in which he sought to expand Slobovia cultural holdings, in order to provide the micronation with a "place in the sun". He undertook a build-up of the micronation's military on a scale never before seen since its founding. He came to describe his personality and internal policies as showing the "defiant mark of an enlightened despot". His reign subsequently came to an end in 2006 when he decided to abdicate the throne, encouraging Slobovians to transform the micronation into a republic.
In October 2005, Thompson sought to become a defender of the rights and sovereignty of other micronations following an incident in which the Dinarchy of Antica attacked the sovereignty of the rival Republic of Antica, in addition to its efforts to isolate other micronations that recognized the Republic. Thompson voiced his open support for the Republic and condemned the Dinarchy, while he also attempted to lobby the government of Hanover to do the same.
