The Silver Cormorant is a film award presented at the Mhazar Vegnese Film Festival, which takes place every August in the city of Mhazar, in Vegno. Established in 2025, it is the second most important award of the festival and is given to the film (or films) that, while not winning the Golden Cormorant, stand out for their artistic excellence, narrative innovation, or cultural impact.

History

Introduced since the first edition of the Mhazar Vegnese Film Festival, the Silver Cormorant was created as a recognition of the plurality of cinematic languages that deserve visibility and merit, even in the absence of an overall award. Unlike the Golden Cormorant, which is awarded to a single film, the Silver can be awarded to multiple works in the same edition, with no numerical limit, at the discretion of the jury.

The philosophy behind the award reflects the festival's desire to support different forms of cinematic quality, rewarding works that, in terms of style, content, or impact, do not rank at the very top but contribute significantly to the cultural value of the selection.

The trophy

The trophy consists of a silver statuette depicting a stylized cormorant, similar in shape to the Golden Cormorant but with a satin silver finish. The base is square, with the words Silver Cormorant engraved on the front. Its simple and elegant appearance makes the trophy easily recognizable, maintaining aesthetic consistency with the visual identity of the festival.

Awarding

The Silver Cormorant is awarded by the official jury of the festival, composed of national and international cinema personalities. It may be awarded to one or more films in competition, based on the jury's independent judgment. Criteria may include originality, technical merit, writing, direction, or thematic relevance. The awarding of the Silver Cormorant does not follow a rigid ranking system, but aims to recognize diverse merits, offering a space for appreciation even to works that fall outside the traditional award circuits.
