New Hempton (formerly named Varja F1 Flygfottilj) is the largest town and de facto capital of Samhold. Its population is 17,831, of which roughly 80% are pioneers moving to Samhold from the former District of the Warring Islands. As such, the town holds slightly more than half of the population of the island.
The town was originally a UDF airbase named Varja F1 Flygfottilj. Its airport was repaired and now serves the Hurmu Peace Corps as well as civilian flights to and from Samhold Island. In 1710, the town was renamed New Hempton after the capital of the Warring Islands, Hempton Bay.
