The Secchianello River is a modest but historically significant watercourse located in the northern interior of Vegno, flowing through the Mhazar-Campoasciutto region. It passes near the city of Castel Padaro and contributes to the agricultural fertility of the surrounding plains.
Geography
The river originates from the foothills of the ''Monte Vegnese Minore'', located in the uplands of Mhazar, and travels southeast for approximately 65 kilometers before dispersing into the seasonal wetlands of the Campoasciutto coast. Despite its small size, the Secchianello is one of the few perennial rivers in this otherwise arid territory.
Economic Role
The river provides a critical source of irrigation for wheat, olive, and grape cultivation. Several canals have been constructed along its banks to direct water to the farmlands near Buonriposo and Castel Padaro.
Historically, small mills dotted the riverbanks, some of which have been restored for tourism or converted into hydro-heritage sites.
Traditional songs and poems often reference the Secchianello as a symbol of fertility of the fields and abundance.
Environmental Features
While modest in flow, the Secchianello supports a small but resilient ecosystem. Reeds, frogs, migratory birds, and river trout are common. Conservation efforts by the Vegnese Regional Authority have created protected riparian zones along its middle course.
