The Sanama Ministry of Justice is the Council of State department responsible for policy areas related to justice, law enforcement, elections, courts, immigration, human rights and related issues. It forms a part of the Council of State and is headed by the Secretary for Justice, reporting to the Chancellor. The department in its current form was created in 1687 with the passage of the national constitution and the beginning of the Third Republic, but it traces its origin to the Federal Department of Justice established in 1673. The Secretary for Justice, who also serves as the Attorney General, is assisted by two Council of State secretaries, the Secretary for Women, Families and Human Rights, and the Secretary for Immigration. The Secretary for Justice directs the business of the department, assigns areas of responsibility to subordinate officials, and issues policy and regulations according to law and directives from the Chancellor and Council of State. The chief attorney of the national government, the Advocate General, also serves as a senior official in the Department of Justice.
In 1692 the Gender Equality Office and the Civil Rights Office were merged to form the Civil and Human Rights Directorate.
