Royston Merrick (1581–1603), eldest son of Royston Merrick and elder brother of Royston Merrick II, arrived in Tyrenia with his father in 1599. He enrolled at the medical school in the People's Academy of Elwynn. He is perhaps best known for the freak accident which ended his life in medical school. As mentioned in The Silveronian Times, "Whilst dissecting an imprisoned Elwynnese rebel who donated his body to science before an audience of fifty of his peers, the cadaver experienced involuntary movement which resulted in Mr. Merrick's throat being slit by a scalpel".

His younger brother, who was born after his death, was named after him and their mutual father.
