Dr. Rafael Yazapa is a Nouvelle Alexandrian surgeon and medical scientist. He is generally remembered as the Federal Surgeon General for three different administrations: those of Felipe de Almagro, Paolo Antonio Aguilar, and Marissa Santini. He held the office between 1713 AN and 1739 AN, the longest tenant of the position in the history of Nouvelle Alexandrie. While in office, he pioneered biomedical sciences and health education, including the creation of the biannual State of National Health Report that has become a staple of public health policy. He was also known for his weekend educational show, Una Mañana con el Cirujano General, which he hosted between 1715 AN and 1722 AN.
Yazapa was born in Parap, Wechua Nation, to a middle income family. The loss of his grandfather at the age of 10 prompted him to pursue a career in medicine. He was educated at the Royal University of Parap, and received a double Masters Degree in both Medicine and General Surgery. He became Lead Surgeon at the Cárdenas University Learning Hospital in 1710 AN. He was eventually invited to fill the position of Surgeon-General by President Felipe de Almagro. He was kept on as Surgeon-General by both Aguilar and Santini, owing to his extensive leadership in public health policy and health education.
A Cárdenas Metro stop was renamed after him in 1744 AN.
After he resigned as Surgeon-general in 1739 AN, he became a Professor of Surgery at the University of Cárdenas, until his retirement at age 75. During that time, he wrote multiple textbooks.
