Pit fighting, or sometimes also referred to as bloodsport, is one of the more popular sports in Shireroth. The sport is controversial in some countries, as it can be violent and some feel it glorifies violence. Despite this, it is still a popular activity in Shireroth and continues to grow in popularity ever since its introduction on a mass scale by Kaiser Verion in the early 17th century, with many fighting pits having been restored and expanded during Kaiseress Salome's reign.

It is a martial art in which two or more people fight in an enclosed pit for the purpose of entertainment. Pit fighters typically (but not necessarily) wear some kind protective gear, such as helmets and gloves, and use a variety of weapons, such as swords, daggers, and maces. The equipment is paid for by the fighter or his sponsors. The rules of the fight are usually determined by the pit master, and the referees ensure that the rules are followed. The winner is usually the one who is able to knock out his opponent and subsequently kill him, or force him to surrender.

Pit fighting became an important part of Shirerithian culture ever since its popularization by Kaiser Verion I and opening of the Verionsput, and many of its citizens attend regular bouts. It is also popularly used as a form of entertainment and gambling. Pit fighters are often highly respected in Shireroth, and some have even reached celebrity status. Retired pit fighters can often been found at the Imeritus Pleasure District, where they can find a lucrative job.

The sport is governed by the Shirerithian Pit Fighting Association, which is responsible for organizing tournaments, setting rules, and ensuring the safety of those involved. The Association also provides medical and financial assistance to those injured in pit fights.

While not common, people from the lower classes - even enslaved ones - can work their way up on the societal ladder. More often than not pit fighting is a way for people to show off their skills and gain fame and fortune at the same time.
