The NBC Election Night theme starts playing. The shot begins with a shot of the newly finished NBC News studios in the capital, Cardenas. Think of Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, US. People walk past the building, cars driving past the building on the street. The shot then widens to reveal more and more of the capital city. [11:23 AM] VOICEOVER: Ladies and gentlemen, tonight Nouvelle Alexandrie decides. Our country's second general election concludes today and we will be sharing with you results from all around the country. Welcome to tonight's NBC News Election Night special, with Vanessa Deveraux, Ignacio Perez, and Calvin Gold.

Vanessa Deveraux BOT

— 07/31/2021

Good evening, Nouvelle Alexandrie. I am Vanessa Deveraux. I am joined by Ignacio Perez and Calvin Gold tonight to present our nation's second general election results. Polls are starting to close in many places in Nouvelle Alexandrie and we'll be here all night bringing you the latest developments.

Ignacio Perez BOT

— 07/31/2021

We're beginning to see some of the regional results start to trickle in. The election is expected to see high turnout this year, but many experts indicate that it will be less than the first general election. Let's see what the first round of results tell us.

Calvin Gold BOT

— 07/31/2021

Now we're gonna go live to the count at the City Hall right here in Cárdenas. Our correspondant, Louise Villiers, is there. Louise?

NBC News BOT

— 07/31/2021

VILLIERS: Thank you, Calvin. We're here near City Hall in the Federal Capital District, where election workers are working around the clock to give us a quick and accurate count of the vote here.

On the ground I've heard that lines for voting were long, but cannot be compared at all to the 1693 general election. Less people came out to vote this election. Some have credited this to a more muted campaign season where parties did not actively campaign for votes. We'll see how voters will cast their ballots momentarily.

[11:43 AM] VILLIERS: Looks like we can go live to the official count, we're gonna get results for the Federal Capital District... [11:43 AM] The shot changes to the interior of the City Hall, where the election officials are gathered to announce the results to the press. [11:46 AM] RESULTS FOR THE FEDERAL CAPITAL DISTRICT

Vanessa Deveraux BOT

— 07/31/2021

The city of Cardenas has split its two Deputies between the Federal Humanist Party and the Social Democratic and Liberal Alliance tonight. The first results of the evening. Calvin, what can you tell us about these results? In 1693, the FHP cleared 40% here and the then-Progressive Federalists got to 32.5%. Both parties increased their share of the vote, but the FHP has won here.

Calvin Gold BOT

— 07/31/2021

That's right, Vanessa. Tonight, I think we'll see that merger between the Solidarity Party and the Progressive Party has brought the left together meaningfully. But they didn't campaign, they didn't actively show voters how different they would be from the incumbent government. The Federal Capital District is a very small sample of the general electorate, however. The night is just beginning. [11:56 AM] What I can say here is that the FHP is benefiting greatly from the trust of government workers and their families, who still make up the lion's share of the population here in the Federal Capital District. [11:57 AM] This is still a newly built city, and we'll likely see this change in the future as Cardenas grows and its economy starts to diversify. The left is seeing bigger numbers thanks to their merger, but the night is still early. I think the favorite here is the Federal Humanist Party. They remain popular, especially with how they have performed in Government and that they have garnered wide support with the war in Eura, with Operation Paramount.

Vanessa Deveraux BOT

— 07/31/2021

Thanks for your insight, Calvin. So there we have it, Cardenas, the capital city - its two Deputies, one for the Federal Humanist Party, one for the Social Democratic & Liberal Alliance.

Ignacio Perez BOT

— 07/31/2021

The road to 310 seats for the majority in the Federal Assembly begins now - out of Cardenas, one seat each for the Federal Humanist Party and for the Social Democratic & Liberal Alliance.

1 [12:01 PM] Next up, we are getting reports that results are coming out of Valencia at the moment... one moment please. Ignacio puts his finger to his earpiece to listen to the information coming in. One moment, please - with polls closing in many other parts of the country, we're starting to see a wave of results come in.

Calvin Gold BOT

— 07/31/2021

Next up, we have the Region of Valencia. Valencia has traditionally been one of the regions where the left can count on a large group of voters, a solid majority to deliver seats for them there. This was where in Alexandria, the Social Democratic Rally and other social democratic organizations of the past had a vast sway among voters. However, tonight, we may see something else entirely. [12:04 PM] With parties largely having failed to campaign, their voters were not meaningfully mobilized. The base of support of the Federal Humanist Party is energized, active, and engaged - but outside of this, we may see depressed support for parties that had real chances to win or at the very least, make this upcoming Assembly difficult for the FHP to navigate.

Vanessa Deveraux BOT

— 07/31/2021

Let's bring up the results now - for the Region of Valencia and its 28 seats.

NBC News BOT

— 07/31/2021

REGION OF VALENCIA

Ignacio Perez BOT

— 07/31/2021

The Federal Humanist Party takes almost 50% of the vote and seizes 14 seats in a region that has traditionally been a bastion of the left. Incredible. The Social Democratic & Liberal Alliance captures 11 seats. Notice here that we're starting to see votes divert to independent candidacies... Calvin, what can you tell us about the independents here in this election? Will they be making a difference? Seizing a larger share of the vote than initially expected?

Calvin Gold BOT

— 07/31/2021

Well, Ignacio, I think it's still too early to tell, but what I can tell you about Valencia specifically is that Valencia is showing us that tonight might be bittersweet for the left and possibly a big win for the Federal Humanist Party. Independents may be part of the calculation here moving forward. When voters cannot see their parties appealing to them, campaigning, asking for their vote - they are likely to go to those candidates and causes that do. [12:09 PM] And independent candidates usually wage very hard local campaigns to get their name out - they don't have the party infrastructure that many other candidates do, so they have a larger uphill climb to do. [12:10 PM] And when they do this and none of the other parties show up, then they get their airwaves all to themselves. [12:12 PM] Last election, we saw that Cambio Democratico and the Progressive Federalists combined had 60% of the vote. The merger between Solidarity Party, the successor to the Progressive Federalists, and the Progressive Party, the successor to Cambio Democratico, should have made this an iron clad lock for the Social Democratic and Liberal Alliance. [12:13 PM] But that's not what we are seeing tonight. Apathy, lack of campaigning, depressed turnout among their supporters, and a serious lack of activity has seen their vote share drop precipitously and give this to the FHP. It's incredible to see the FHP reach almost 50% here.

Vanessa Deveraux BOT

— 07/31/2021

I wonder what this will mean for the rest of the evening... next up, we are getting reports that the Region of Santander is getting close to reporting its results. [12:15 PM] The Region of Santander has expanded significantly since the last election and has brought in a diverse coalition of voters and settlers. We are expecting that Santander will see some depressed turnout as well, but we'll see if it will repeat what Valencia has shown so far.

Ignacio Perez BOT

— 07/31/2021

And the road to a majority in the Federal Assembly continues, now with the results from the Region of Valencia, we can update them...

CHRYON ON TV: Results from Santander, the Wechua Nation incoming...

Vanessa Deveraux BOT

The Region of Santander has tallied its votes and finalized the count, let's see what the voters of Santander have said tonight...

NBC News BOT

— 07/31/2021

REGION OF SANTANDER

Calvin Gold BOT

— 07/31/2021

Numbers coming out of Santander tonight reveal that the FHP has won a majority of the vote there and will capture 45 seats. The Social Democratic & Liberal Alliance has actually performed better than in Valencia here, and better than the individual parties in 1693. [12:21 PM] My apologies - I correct myself. The combined votes here in 1693 for both parties was closer to 42%. But the drop in support for the FHP compared to 1693 can definitely be attributed to the unified left and a strong contingent here of independent candidates - most of them from the newer territories that have been added to the Region in recent territorial expansions. [12:22 PM] Something I am also starting to notice consistently is that the Freedom Party, previously not even showing up in national and regional polls, is consistently beginning to pop up and win seats. [12:24 PM] They didn't score any seats in Santander tonight, but that's because the Digger's Society is consistently beating them in many places in Santander. The Digger's Society is at the very least clearing thresholds for seats, but again, they also did not show up to campaign or did much when they were part of the Government of National Unity. A squandered opportunity there.

Ignacio Perez BOT

— 07/31/2021

Excuse me, Calvin. We are getting reports that the Region of the Wechua Nation, a Region that is vote and seat rich, is getting ready to release its results in just a few moments.

Vanessa Deveraux BOT

— 07/31/2021

Let's go live to the capital of the Wechua Nation, Parap, where we have our correspondent Federico Lopez at the count.

NBC News BOT

— 07/31/2021

LOPEZ: Thank you, Vanessa. The mood here tonight reflects that the Wechua Nation, a Region known for being a strongly pro-left region, will flip to the Federal Humanist Party tonight. The lack of campaigning and the lackluster effort of other parties in this Region let the FHP and independents basically run free here and we're about to see this in the results here. As Calvin mentioned earlier, this election has shown that parties have allowed, in many instances, wide opportunities pass by... one moment, the results are about to be posted... [12:29 PM] REGION OF THE WECHUA NATION

Calvin Gold BOT

— 07/31/2021

Stunning results - last election, the FHP performed well here in the Wechua Nation, but the combined share of the vote between the leftist parties then showed that the FHP was in trouble should they unite. The combined share for Cambio Democratico and the Progressive Federalists, who are now united in the Social Democratic & Liberal Alliance for this election, achieved 57.9% of the vote in 1693 to the Humanists' 39.3%. [12:33 PM] Today, in 1698, we have an entirely different story. [12:34 PM] This is, once again, where a lack of effort and campaigning from the SD&LP has directly benefited the Federal Humanist Party. I think, based on the trends we're seeing tonight, that it is entirely possible that we may see them achieve an outright majority in the Federal Assembly tonight.

Vanessa Deveraux BOT

— 07/31/2021

Calvin - that may be a bit premature. Nouvelle Alexandrie is a complicated multiparty democracy and the first government here had to be cobbled as an uneasy coalition that changed composition and Presidents constantly. What makes you reach that conclusion?

Calvin Gold BOT

— 07/31/2021

Well, if I am wrong tonight, Vanessa, I will eat my hat. I'm not wearing one. But we can find one. I will eat my hat. It's starting to be very clear what's happening here.

2

1 [12:37 PM] As a political party, you have a base of support. In 1693, we saw how the split in the left greatly benefited the Federal Humanist Party. The parties showed up and campaigned. They brought the FHP to the table with a coalition proposal and were ready to govern. Then... the left's leaders and energy simply vanished. [12:38 PM] The Government of National Unity may have been composed of the FHP and other parties that were mainly left, but the government always did what the FHP decided. Augusts Strong is a popular leader and seen as a strong leader. His successor, Gerhardt Eugen Seydlitz, has characterized himself as a strong but pragmatic leader in his service in this government, and that has given the FHP added appeal this time around. [12:39 PM] And to add to that and make matters worse for the other parties - no one else showed up to campaign! One must ask a very, very important question here. Are these parties that are not showing up to campaign, to earn the trust and vote of the people... are they worth keeping? What's happening to our democracy? And this is not to knock the Federal Humanist Party. I'm personally non-partisan as a political journalist. [12:40 PM] But we have to start asking ourselves some serious questions here. Questions that strike at the very health and vitality of our democracy. [12:40 PM] Will the political parties show up? Will voters get choices? Not seeing that right now, I'm afraid.

Vanessa Deveraux BOT

— 07/31/2021

Very well, thank you Calvin. I think you make excellent points here. Where will voters go if their choices are apathetic about making themselves known? About doing the work? About governing?

Calvin Gold BOT

— 07/31/2021

Exactly, Vanessa. We'll see what happens this next session of the Federal Assembly.

Ignacio Perez BOT

— 07/31/2021

Let's go ahead and update our road to 310 numbers...

NBC News BOT

ROAD TO 310

Vanessa Deveraux BOT

— 07/31/2021

Next up, with the Keltian Regions reporting their results, we are now moving to New Luthoria.

Calvin Gold BOT

— 07/31/2021

New Luthoria will be curious to see, Vanessa. New Luthoria was the developing heart and center of Cambio Democratico. Let's see if any of that remains in this election. In 1693, New Luthoria gave Cambio Democratico 39.4%, the Progressive Federalists 14.5% and the Federal Humanists got 41.9%. It seemed then, that if Cambio Democratico would be vigorous under its new leadership, it could very well win New Luthoria and make it one of its solid areas of support. If the current trends hold true, tonight may be a disappointment here. This Region should be a SD&LP lock, but it may not be. They didn't show up.

Ignacio Perez BOT

— 07/31/2021

And we are now getting results from the Region of New Luthoria...

Vanessa Deveraux BOT

And the first win of the night for the Social Democratic and Liberal Alliance in New Luthoria. It looks like there is quite some energy gathered here for the new leftist alliance, a remnant of the energy of candidates and parties past.

Calvin Gold BOT

— 07/31/2021

Perhaps I might have to grab that hat, Vanessa. This is pretty incredible. I think this may be the outlier of the night, but at the moment, I have no way of exactly explaining why the SD&LP have performed so well in New Luthoria tonight. It looks like they have replicated similar numbers as the combined share of Cambio Democratico and the Progressive Federalists - but as you can see, there were no defections to independents here. There were no independent candidates that filed to be part of this election in New Luthoria, that is likely one of the reasons why this has happened. I would be remiss to mention that the FHP did increase its share of the vote here compared to 1693.

Ignacio Perez BOT

— 07/31/2021

And with New Luthoria's seats awarded, let's go ahead and update our Road to 310 table...

The most heavily populated Region of the country and a swing Region extraordinaire. [1:20 PM] FHP wins majority of the votes here and scores a sizable amount of seats.
