Metropolis Television (MT) is a New Alexandrian commercial broadcaster, headquartered in Punta Santiago and owned by the Metropolis Media Group. On the air since 1687 AN, it is a city-only premium pay service that operates 42 television channels and 26 radio stations, reaches more than 95 million households, and runs a video-on-demand service, MT+. MT built its reputation on high-budget scripted drama and on arts and culture programming, and it introduced reality television to the country in the late 1680 ANs. With the Natopian network NAT-TV it created The Housewives, the reality franchise the two networks have broadcast in their home markets since 1694 AN.

History

Metropolis Television began broadcasting in Punta Santiago in 1687 AN, two years after the Proclamation of Punta Santiago founded the federation in the same city and a year after the public National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) made its first broadcasts. Where NBC built a free-to-air national service, MT sold subscriptions, wiring the apartment blocks and business districts of the largest cities and leaving the countryside to the public broadcaster. The model has held throughout the network's history: MT has never operated rural transmitters and remains a city-only network.

Subscription income financed original production. The network built its early identity on drama, arts and culture programming, and a radio arm serving its urban markets, and in the late 1680 ANs it began producing the unscripted series that introduced reality television to Nouvelle Alexandrie.

Corporate development

Metropolis Television is the principal holding of the Metropolis Media Group, a privately held media company based in Punta Santiago. MT was launched in 1687 AN by a syndicate of Punta Santiago financiers and property developers, who wired the new capital's apartment blocks and commercial districts for subscription television. The service reached profitability within its first decade, and its backers consolidated their interests into the Metropolis Media Group, which owns the television network, the radio arm, and the streaming service MT+.

The group's 1690 AN entry into the Natopian market, at first as an exporter of reality formats, was its first venture beyond Nouvelle Alexandrie and began the working relationship with NAT-TV that produced The Housewives four years later. The Metropolis Media Group has remained privately held throughout its history and operates from its original headquarters in Punta Santiago.

Reality television across two markets

MT entered the Natopian market in 1690 AN with a series of reality television programs that drew Natopian audiences, and by 1693 AN the genre's success in Nouvelle Alexandrie had led NAT-TV to establish a reality-television division of its own, which initially syndicated New Alexandrian reality shows. That year NAT-TV chief executive Lawrence Butterson secured a partnership with MT to back the new division and widen its distribution. Butterson also hired MT's special projects director, Constanza Vaela, to lead the division alongside Stannon Vertersberg and Christos Demetrius.

The partnership produced The Housewives of Lindström, which premiered on NAT-TV on 11.II.1694 AN and which MT has carried in Nouvelle Alexandrie from its first season. The franchise's second installment, The Housewives of Punta Santiago, premiered on MT on 5.XIV.1694 AN. The same year MT released Survive or Die: The Euran Green in Nouvelle Alexandrie. The franchise's success made Metropolis Television a major media company in Natopia as well as Nouvelle Alexandrie.

MT added The Housewives of Parap in 1700 AN and built five spin-off series tracing to the Punta Santiago cast: It's Momma's House (1702 AN1710 AN), Momma's Table (1704 AN1712 AN), Lopez y Lopez (1711 AN1714 AN), Christina Aguilar's Funhouse (1725 AN1729 AN), and Xtina: Redemption (1733 AN1735 AN). In 1737 AN, the fraud trial of a cast member's husband became the central storyline of the highest-rated season in the history of The Housewives of Punta Santiago.[1] In 1738 AN the network pioneered interactive programming with viewer-influenced storylines.

War years and recession

When the Fourth Euran War broke out in 1745 AN, MT and NAT-TV suspended all four home-market franchise series within weeks and reassigned production crews and studio space to news coverage; no new seasons aired in 1745 AN or 1746 AN.[2] Production resumed in 1747 AN to record premiere audiences. In 1748 AN, MT removed Parap cast member Ximena Ampuero, citing wartime sensibilities in declining to film her family's legal proceedings.

The franchise's sixtieth anniversary in 1754 AN was marked by Sixty Years of The Housewives, staged at the Lindström Opera House and broadcast simultaneously on MT and NAT-TV to the largest single-broadcast audience in franchise history.[3]

Advertising income fell in the economic troubles that followed the PBS banking crisis and deepened into the Recession of 1757. From 1756 AN MT shortened the episode orders of The Housewives of Punta Santiago and The Housewives of Parap and negotiated the shorter orders against reduced per-episode fees; the Natopian series were less affected. The Housewives of Cárdenas, in development at MT since the early 1740 ANs and delayed first by the war and then by the recession, began casting in 1758 AN as an MT and NAT-TV co-production.[4] In 1757 AN, programming director Hélène Fabron discussed a possible revival of The Housewives of Astérapolis in an interview with NBC.

Channels and services

Metropolis Television distributes 42 television channels and 26 radio stations to subscribers in Nouvelle Alexandrie's largest cities. Its flagship is MT One, which carries the network's marquee scripted and reality programming. The portfolio also includes MT Drama, given over to scripted originals and their back catalog; MT Escena, an arts and culture channel; and MT Cinema, a film channel drawing on the network's licensed and original film library. The remaining channels carry genre and time-shifted feeds within the same premium-entertainment remit; the network maintains no standing news or sports service, leaving those fields to the public broadcaster and the specialist networks.

The radio arm, branded Metropolis Radio, pairs a classical and arts service with contemporary music formats aimed at the same urban audience as the television channels. MT+, the network's subscription video-on-demand service, offers the television catalog together with a slate of streaming-only originals.

Programming

Scripted originals

Metropolis Television's scripted division produces the high-budget dramas that anchor MT One and MT Drama, typically self-contained seasons set in the professional and moneyed circles of the capital. Its best-known productions have been sold internationally.

  • Diplomatic Circles (1711 AN–present) — a political drama set among the embassies and ministries of the federal capital; the network's longest-running scripted series and an international critical success
  • Market Forces (1719 AN1738 AN) — a drama following a Punta Santiago investment house, widely regarded as MT's international breakthrough
  • Santa Marta (1728 AN–present) — a medical drama set in a Punta Santiago teaching hospital
  • The Tower (1734 AN–present) — an ensemble series set in a single high-rise, following both its wealthy residents and the staff who serve them
  • Cámara (1748 AN–present) — a legal drama built around a Punta Santiago defense advocate

Arts and culture

MT's arts and culture programming, carried chiefly on MT Escena, is considered the industry standard in Nouvelle Alexandrie, and the network has used it to present itself as a patron of New Alexandrian cultural life.

  • Metropolitan (1699 AN–present) — a weekly arts and ideas magazine covering the visual arts, theater, music, and letters
  • Grand Stage (1704 AN–present) — performance broadcasts of theater, opera, and concert from the capital's venues
  • Maestros (1722 AN–present) — a documentary series profiling New Alexandrian artists and cultural figures

Reality

MT's reality slate is anchored by the Housewives editions it produces and carries in Nouvelle Alexandrie, the programming for which the network is best known to the general public. It also supplies reality segments as aftershow content to NAT-TV's Nothing Good After Midnight!.

  • The Housewives of Punta Santiago (1694 AN–present) — MT's flagship reality series
  • The Housewives of Parap (1700 AN–present)
  • The Housewives of Lindström (1694 AN–present) — produced by NAT-TV and carried by MT in Nouvelle Alexandrie
  • The Housewives of Cárdenas (1758 AN–present) — an MT and NAT-TV co-production
  • Survive or Die: The Euran Green (1694 AN) — a competition series released alongside the first Housewives seasons

Late night

Metropolitan Late Night, hosted by Joaquin Reyes and Sofia Mendez, has aired since 1729 AN. An urban-focused variety show, it is built around celebrity game segments, street comedy, and coverage of the capital's nightlife.

Reception and cultural standing

Metropolis Television introduced both reality television and high-budget subscription drama to Nouvelle Alexandrie, and its early scripted and arts programming is credited with redefining premium television in the country. Its reality output, above all The Housewives, has given the network a cultural reach well beyond its subscriber base.

The subscription model MT pioneered shaped the structure of New Alexandrian television, establishing the premium, city-only tier that sits alongside the public broadcasting of NBC and the country's free-to-air and specialist networks. The network's concentration in the wealthiest urban markets has also drawn criticism that its programming speaks to a narrow, affluent audience, a characterization MT has done little to discourage in its marketing to urban professionals.

Operations

Metropolis Television is listed among Nouvelle Alexandrie's terrestrial broadcast networks as a premium pay service, with 42 television channels, 26 radio stations, video on demand, and a reach of 95,654,978 households concentrated in the country's metropolitan areas. It is a city-only network.
