Marpo Guoxie was the second-largest city in Rulak (after Khimtsang). Founded by Tserin Hariti when the communist-led Soviet Republic was in its heyday, the settlement's original name was Red Village. Unlike any other communities on the island, Marpo was planned according to communist ideals and was laid out in a tightly-controlled grid pattern. Many Soviet-era buildings remain in use to this day, including the tenements and cement factory. The Soviet government was also responsible for building the international airport (now Kamala International Airport) and dredging the harbor to support portage for container ships. While Khimtsang remained the political and intellectual hub of the island, Marpo Guoxie was designed to serve as Rulak's industrial center. As such it became home to the majority of the country's factories, mechanical/technical equipment shops, and manufacturing. It continues to serve in this role and provides the majority of manufactured goods for the island while exporting other goods to the mainland, in particular cement.

Geography

Marpo Guoxie was located just north of the Micran equator and thus has an equatorial climate. The city was situated along the northeastern coast and faces the mainland of Apollonia. It was somewhat sheltered by the bulk of the Apollonian continent and therefore experiences less severe weather as cities located along the southern coast.

Climate

The city's climate falls within that of the tropical rainforest climate with no distinctive seasons, uniform temperature and pressure, high humidity, and abundant rainfall. Temperatures usually range from 25 to 35 °C (77 to 95 °F). While temperature does not vary greatly throughout the year, there was a wetter monsoon season from November to January.

Landmarks

Kamala International Airport (des. KIA) was the only airport serving Rulak. With decreased interest in travel by sea and no land bridge connecting the island to Apollonia, the airport has become the most-frequented means of travel to and from the island.

Marpo Cement Factory

The Marpo Cement Factory was the largest factory on the island and the oldest one still in operation. Limestone and clay were mined nearby, which were the primary ingredients in making cement. Rulakan cement has long been a staple export for the country and a major source of income.
