The Leader of the Opposition of Nouvelle Alexandrie is the de facto leader of the largest political party or coalition not currently in government in the Federal Assembly of Nouvelle Alexandrie. The role is an important part of the Federation’s parliamentary system and is recognized by convention, though it holds no constitutional powers.
The Leader of the Opposition leads scrutiny of the incumbent government, presents alternative policies, and typically heads a "shadow Council of State" to mirror government departments, agencies, and roles. The position is often seen as the primary alternative to the sitting Premier and plays a key role in national political debate and legislative negotiations.
As of 12.XII.1739 AN, the current Leader of the Opposition is Gabrielle Fitzgerald, leader of the Democratic Socialist Party and the broader Alliance for a Just Nouvelle Alexandrie (AJNA) coalition, following AJNA’s gains in the 1739 general election.
