Itziar Eusebia Franco (born 22.IV.1672 AN) is a Nouveau Alexandrian politician and Member of the Federal Assembly in the Cortes Federales since 1698 AN. Ideologically, she identifies as a democratic socialist. Franco had previously served on the National Committee of the Young Socialists of Nouvelle Alexandrie from the age of 16 as a representative of Alduria and was later elected to be the National Chair of the organisation from 1690 AN until 1694 AN.
Early Life and Political Activities
Franco was born in 1672 to a small business owning family in Punta Santiago. She had three siblings, a brother (Juan Franco) and two sisters (Bernardita and Carmela Franco). Itziar was the youngest of the children. Franco’s mother and father, Fabricio and Graciana Franco owned a small restaurant in the city. After attending school, the couples’ children would help out in the restaurant until closing time. Despite working when she got home from school, Franco received consistently high grades at school and was consistently top of her class. She especially enjoyed humanities subjects at school, which is where she got the highest grades.
Franco first became politically involved during the Aldurian election in the 1682 AN election, where Franco was energized by the policies and vision put forward by Marco Zimmer and the Democratic Socialist Party. Franco would sometimes miss out on her shifts at the family restaurant in order to campaign or engage in other party activities.
Aged 16, Franco became a member of the National Committee of the Young Socialists of Nouvelle Alexandrie, being one of the Aldurian representatives on the Committee. Aged 18, she was elected National Chair of the organisation and in 1692 she was re-elected to the role. She stepped down from the role in 1694 National Chair election due to being ineligible to stand for re-election again.
Franco attended the University of Punta Santiago, where she studied politics. Following her graduation from University, Franco worked at a SuperBerto in Punta Santiago as well as continuing to do shifts at the family restaurant.
Shortly before her 23rd birthday, Franco became a researcher for The International before moving on to a research role at The Riverine Herald and moving to Corrada del Rio in Mondego to take the job. Franco then left The Riverine Herald in 1696 AN and moved back to Punta Santiago to work as a researcher and advisor to Susana Agua, a Social Democratic and Liberal Alliance politician who worked in the Aldurian regional legislature. Through this job, Franco made contacts and friends within the party.
Member of the Federal Assembly (1698-)
Franco was selected as a candidate for the Social Democratic and Liberal Alliance in Alduria at the 1698 election. Her campaign was successful and she was elected to the Federal Assembly.
In 1703, Franco was appointed by Julio Delgado as Deputy Leader of the Social Democratic and Liberal Alliance shortly before the New Alexandrian general election, 1703. In the election, the party won a surprise victory and only narrowly missed out on a majority. Subsequently, Franco was appointed as Vice-President of the Government, being the first woman to hold the position, as well as being appointed as the Secretary for Social Security and National Solidarity, Secretary for Education and Secretary for Labour.
Political Views
Franco is on the left of the party and has been vocal about the need for better health care and education provision, which she believes should be provided by the state. Franco believes that, in some circumstances, the rights of regional legislatures must be put behind the urgent need for reforms to improve the quality of life for citizens of Nouvelle Alexandria. Franco has consistently supported gay rights and individual social freedoms.
Religiously, Franco is an atheist.
Personal Life
Franco has been open about her struggles with social anxiety throughout her life as well as being autistic.
Franco is teetotal due to seeing the damage that alcoholism caused to her brother, and has been an advocate for greater support for those suffering from addiction as well as tackling the root causes.
