Honobe (Sanpogo: ほのべ; nicknamed the "Land of Yellow Pebbles") is a city in Honobe-mika Prefecture, Sanpantul. As of 1731 AN, it has a population of 212,890 residents. The city is known for its food processing industry, coastal trade, and cultural influences from a Chechen community that settled in the area during the 18th century.

History

Honobe was originally founded in 1718 AN as a small coastal settlement, relying on fishing, agriculture, and local shrine activities. In 1720 AN, the city came under the control of Sanpantul, which marked the beginning of its urban and economic growth. Under Sanpantul administration, the harbor was expanded, trade routes were established, and Honobe gradually became a regional hub for commerce and food production.

The arrival of nearly 2,000 Chechen settlers during the early 18th century had a lasting cultural impact on the city. Their traditions influenced local cuisine, architecture, and festivals, giving Honobe a distinctive cultural blend compared to other cities in Sanpantul.

Economy

Honobe is primarily recognized as a food processing and trade city. Its coastal location provides access to shipping routes, while its factories specialize in seafood processing, packaged foods, and agricultural goods. The city is also famous for its local cuisine, particularly ox tongue barbecue (Gyūtan), which has become a regional specialty.

Culture

The Chechen community has shaped much of Honobe’s cultural identity. The most visible landmark is the Chechen Tower, built to commemorate the early settlers. Annual festivals celebrating both Sanpanese and Chechen heritage are held in the city, attracting visitors from across the region.

Religious and cultural landmarks include the Lily Temple and the Honobe Shinto Gate, which are among the most visited sites in the prefecture.

Tourism

Honobe is also known for its scenic beaches and seaside harbor. The city’s coastline serves as both a commercial port and a tourist attraction, with sandy beaches, resorts, and seasonal festivals. Tourism plays a supplementary role in the local economy, particularly during the summer months.

Government

The city is governed by a mayor-council system. Since 1734 AN, the office of mayor has been held by Ose Kane of the Liberal Party.

Demographics

Honobe’s population, as of 1731 AN, stands at 212,890. The city hosts a significant ethnic Chechen minority, which continues to maintain its cultural presence alongside the majority Sanpanese population.
