The Duke of Yabucoa is a hereditary ducal title in the nobility of Nouvelle Alexandrie, one of the Wakara peerages created when the Wakara nobility entered the federal nobility in 1719 AN. Like all ducal titles in the Federation, it carries a grandeeship, so that its holder is styled The Most Excellent Lord.[1]
The title was created for Yucahúké Busiri, the First Minister of the Wakara who co-signed the Plan de Hato Rey on behalf of his people in 1717 AN and afterward served as the first Regional Governor of Boriquén. It takes its name from Yabucoa, a cacicazgo and city of central Boriquén and Busiri's native seat.
History
When the Wakara homeland entered the Federation through the Plan de Hato Rey in 1717 AN, the standing of the Wakara nobility was recognized within the federal nobility. The cacical House of Guarionex was recognized as a princely house, and the wider Wakara peerage was formally integrated in 1719 AN, among them the House of Tavárez, Dukes of Bayamón, and the counts of Utuado, Ciales, and Humacao.[2] The dukedom of Yabucoa was created in this integration for Yucahúké Busiri, in recognition of his service as First Minister and signatory of the Plan.
The dukedom is one of the Wakara ducal titles held outside the cacical House of Guarionex, alongside the dukedom of Bayamón. Because a grandeeship in Nouvelle Alexandrie is always attached to a ducal title, its creation raised its holder to the rank of Grandee, with a seat in the Chamber of Peers.
