The collapse of Barbary was an almost sudden event that happened to the Barbarian Republic in XI.1689. Following the death of the nation's president Ase Wittenduin in X.1689, it was discovered that the nation was further in debt than had been known to the public. Most of the debt was owed to overseas hedge funds in Jingdaoese Kala and creditors became nervous when they learned how much the republic owed. The republic became unable to take up more loans to repay existing loans and became unable to fulfil its financial obligations. It first defaulted on its overseas obligations, but it soon became clear that no salaries would be paid to the Republican Guard either. Several centurions of the guard tried to perform a military coup, but their efforts were not coordinated and while they ended up murdering the Council of Basella, they could not agree who would lead the nation, let alone how the state should be funded. In the resulting chaos the cultural melting pot that had been the Barbarian Republic disintegrated, ethnic groups started to see the problem with the other ethnic groups. Arviddians started murdering Saxons, who started murdering Batavians, who started murdering Arviddians. Successful Barbarian companies such as Baicha Heavy Vehicle Industries and Arvidsudde Digital Systems moved their headquarters to the more stable Jingdaoese Empire, resulting in even less income for the republic. In XII.1689 the last centurion who claimed to rule the republic was murdered in broad daylight, only a day after he had held his victory march through the streets of Basella. After his death, no one stood up to unite the republic, which fell apart.
