C1 motorway
The C1 Motorway (Carratera 1) connects the cities of Parap, Cárdenas, and Jirishanca, connecting with C8 at Jirishanca and C15 at Taulliraju. It was the first inter-urban motorway that was completed as part of the Pan-Keltian Highway in 1706 AN.
The motorway is a total of 415 km (260 miles) long and is the most utilized motorway in Nouvelle Alexandrie.
History
The Wechua Royal Roads, or Qhapaq Ñan, were the national roads of the Wechua Nation. Much of the track of the C1 was part of network between Parap and Rimarima, the two largest cities in Wechua. The first plans to upgrade these to a heavy bulk carriageway that could form the backbone of the national highway came when the New Prosperity Plan was devised. The evolution into the Pan-Keltian Highway saw the track of the C1 expanded into Santander and the new capital at Cárdenas. Construction began with the upgrading of the network between Taulliraju and Rimarima in 1693 AN, which was opened as the first part of C1 in 1696 AN, and was the first of the PKH to be completed. In the same years, the massive network requirements of the C55 in Cardenas took shape, and the track between Cardenas and Rimarima opened in 1700 AN, terminating at J39A. This remained the network until 1706 AN, when the road between Cárdenas and Jirishanca opened.
Developments beyond 1706 AN included the building and opening of the Sianquiz bypass in 1709 AN and the Tolevera Bridge in 1713 AN.
Route

The C1 starts at the Paramincapa Junction with the C15 east of Taulliraju. It moves southwest towards Parap having only two exits, before entering the Parap City Ring and running on the C22. It exits the ring at the Morco Falapiti Junction and travels southeast towards Huichajanca and then Auquimarca, where it turns southwest at Fonco Foropapa Junction towards Rimarima. At Rimarima, it enters the City Ring and runs on the C48. Exiting southwest at Fornodalis Junction, turning to Kapillayuq. It turns south there at Kapilla Farcapa Junction, to Ciudad Real. It runs south to Cárdenas, entering the Outer City Ring there, where it runs on the C55. It turns west at Franscella Junction to Jirishanca. It terminates there, joining C8 at Forno Capella Junction.
The line throughout is a mix of dual-lane and three-lane carriageway, except at the Parap and Rimarima City Rings, where they are four-lane carriageways; and at Cárdenas Outer City Ring, where they are six-lane carriageways. Alongside the entire profile, there are safety barriers and a hard shoulder. Between J27 and J28, there is a median strip as well.
Bridges and Tunnels
There are a total of 4 tunnels and 6 bridges on the C1: starting with the Cancha Humahuaca Tunnel at 24.3 mi, entering the Parap Valley; the Colque Bridge at 55.4 mi; the Qollqunuapa Tunnel at 79.1 mi south of Huichajanca; the Auquitayasi Tunnel at 106.3 mi south of Auquimarca; the Uchuypoma Bridge at 122.3 mi north of Rimarima; the Jaillita Bridge at 114.5 mi south of Rimarima; the Rufiyos Bridge at 156.8 mi, north of Cárdenas; the Cárdenas West Highway Tunnel at 189.3; The Copalas Bridge at 202.2 mi, west of Cárdenas; and the Tolevera Bridge at 245.2 mi, east of Jirishanca.

Developments
C1-C14 Link (Yoriana Southern Bypass)
The C1-C14 Link (Yoriana Southern Bypass) is a 24.5 mi two-lane carriageway that would run east from the C14, joining the C1 at a new junction J9A south of Yoriana. It is meant to relieve the congestion from Parap by bypassing the City Ring. It would also connect the town of Achachau. Its planning was approved in 1712 AN. Construction began in the same year, and the Link opened in 1716 AN as the A493.
C1/C1A Interchange
The J14A interchange is a dual-two lane carriageway. There are proposals to widen this to a dual three-lane or dual four-lane junction. This would relieve congestion towards Qusqu. Planning began in 1716 AN, with eventual completion in 1729 AN as a three-lane junction.
Junction 21A
Junction 21A interchanges with the C6. The A519 runs about 1.2 mi east of it, and has a separate interchange. Proposals to adjust the A519 and create a three-layer interchange were made in 1717 AN, with construction finishing earliest in 1720 AN.
Widening between J23 to J26A
The road through Kapillayuq started as dual two-lane. To relieve congestion, proposals to widen to dual three-lane were made in 1710 AN, and construction lasted until 1715 AN.
Cancha Humahuaca Shoulder
Most of the C1, when it opened, had a shoulder on the outside lanes. Due to space constraints, the Cancha Humahuaca Tunnel did not receive these. A separate 'emergency services lane' was proposed in 1700 AN, and was finally completed in 1712 AN.
National Infrastructure Plan
The National Infrastructure Plan allocated a total of €6.3 billion for a wide range of improvements. In the end, a total of seven projects were completed between 1732 AN and 1736 AN:
- To improve connectivity in Jirishanca, Huicajanca and Kapillayuq, new intersections were devised and constructed.
- Multiple new junctions were constructed in between major city rings, to improve connectivity with growing townships, including Escotora and Sapuyaó.
- A total of 26 km of highway was expanded from dual-lane to three-lane, particularly at Huicajanca; with a further four-lane expansion at Ciudad Real between J27A and J28.
- Two new sound barriers were constructed at Calanel and Moradon, for a total of 12 km.
- The construction of the Badregas Orbital Highway, a 30 km far-out eastern orbital around Cárdenas with a total of 16 new intersections.
- The construction of the Olos Bypass, a southeastern connection for the Cárdenas Ring Road.
- The construction of the Giriyancha Bridge between Chuquipoma and Pachakusi, replacing the former steep route through Giriyancha valley and shortening distance by 3 km.
Other vital investment from the NIP included the remediation of the Rufiyos Bridge and Auquitayasi Tunnel, which were repaired and upgraded with new asphalt and signalling.
Speed Limits
The speed limit was reduced to 50 mph between J5 and J8; J20 and J22; J27 and J28A; and J32 and J39A in 1710 AN, to reduce levels of nitrogen dioxide and smog. J47 to J48 followed in 1715 AN. The limit is enforced by traffic enforcement camera
Incidents and accidents
- On 14.X.1700 AN, 8 vehicles crashed in thick fog resulting in the death of two people near J3.
- On 29.VI.1708 AN, two trucks collided and tilted near Telala. The salvage operations required the Cárdenas West Highway Tunnel to be closed for six hours.
- On 09.VIII.1714 AN, the section between J2 and J3 was closed due to a fire at nearby Sianquiz Industrial Zone. The road was fully reopened on 14.VIII, with a 50 mph speed limit in force for the following month.
- On 12.V.1730 AN, 3 vehicles crashed in heavy rain resulting in one death near J18.
- On 19.II.1736 AN, two trucks collided and tiled near J47. The salvage operations closed down Tolevera Bridge for more than twelve hours.
