Birabuchi Nuclear Power Plant (Sanpogo: ビラブチ原子力発電所, Birabuchi Genshiryoku Hatsudensho) is a nuclear power facility located in the town of Birabuchi, approximately 32 kilometres (20 mi) from Aomori city center, Sanpantul. The plant consists of a single high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) unit and is considered medium-sized compared to other nuclear power stations in the country.

The Birabuchi Nuclear Power Plant is one of Sanpantul’s nuclear facilities employing high-temperature gas-cooled reactor technology. It supplies electricity primarily to the northern districts of the Aomori district. The site features two large exhaust stacks and is regarded as a medium-sized installation within Sanpantul’s energy infrastructure.

History

Construction of the Birabuchi plant began in 1720 after Sanpo-Çakar War, following the government’s decision to expand nuclear capacity in the north. The facility was officially opened in 1730 AN, with reactor commissioning completed in 1733 AN.

The location was selected for its proximity to the Aomori regional grid while meeting safety requirements by being situated away from dense population centres.

Design and specifications

The plant operates a single HTGR unit cooled by helium and moderated by graphite. This technology offers higher thermal efficiency and inherent safety benefits due to its passive cooling characteristics.

Two large exhaust stacks dominate the plant’s profile, while the main complex is designed to be resistant to seismic activity and coastal storms.

Operations

Birabuchi is a key component of Sanpantul’s western energy grid, providing consistent baseload power and supplementing renewable energy sources during periods of high demand.
