Alfonso Rivas (born 6.XI.1718 AN) is a New Alexandrian lawyer and politician serving as a Deputy of the Federal Assembly for Alduria and, since 1760 AN, as a Special Counselor to the Council of State under the Federal Accord. A member of the Federal Consensus Party throughout his career, he is the adopted son of the Aldurian statesman Alfonso Velez.
Early life and education
Rivas was born on 6.XI.1718 AN in Punta Santiago. He was adopted as a small child by Alfonso Velez, the former Prime Minister of Alduria, and kept the surname of his birth family rather than take the Velez name. Velez died when Rivas was twelve.
He studied law and, during his university years, moved to Piriya, the Aldurian city on the northern coast whose fortunes turn on its Alexandrium mines, where he settled and built his practice. He has made his home there since, and speaks in the Assembly for a mining economy that ran three-day weeks through the recession while the coastal capital recovered.
Career
Rivas practiced law in Piriya before entering politics with the Federal Consensus Party, the constitutionalist party he has belonged to throughout his public life. He was elected a Deputy of the Federal Assembly for Alduria, where he brought a lawyer's attention to the drafting of legislation.
In 1760 AN, on the formation of the Federal Accord government, Rivas was named a Special Counselor to the Council of State, one of the senior advisers the Council and the Premier draw from the benches of the Federal Assembly. He took the post alongside Cao Qiang, the other Special Counselor named by the incoming government, both of them Federal Consensus deputies from Alduria.
Personal life
Rivas has spoken of making his own name rather than trading on that of his adoptive father. He lives in Piriya, Alduria.
