III - Batavia in Revolt: Thousands Protest Prefecture Plans

1753 Batavian anti-prefecture protests

's KONINGENWAARDE — Yesterday, thousands of Batavians took to the streets of the capital to express their opposition to the Shirithian government's plans to transform the Kingdom of Batavia into a prefecture. With chants of "We love our King," "Batavia Free!" and "No prefecture," protesters demanded respect for the Batavian monarchy and the preservation of their political system.

Since Batavia joined the Imperial Republic of Shireroth in 1711 AN under the Treaty of Raynor's Keep, the Kingdom has maintained a unique position within the empire. That position is now under threat. The current Shirithian government, led by the Vinandy family, plans to abolish the feudal administration and convert Batavia into a prefecture—a administrative unit with no real autonomy. The Lion Throne, the symbol of the Batavian monarchy, would be reduced to a ceremonial role, while a prefect appointed by Shirekeep would hold actual power.

Unrest began in 1752 AN when heated debates erupted in the Lagerhuis between the Conservative Monarchist Party (CMP), led by newly elected party leader Sophia van Rhodeaerde, and republican factions that support the prefecture reform. "We are loyal to Shireroth, but not at the expense of our identity," Van Rhodeaerde declared during a previous session. "Batavia joined the empire voluntarily, not to sacrifice our monarchy and traditions."

The Great Protest March

The demonstration, organized by the CMP and other royalist groups, drew a diverse crowd: students, academics, nobles, and ordinary citizens. Arkadiusplein, the heart of 's Koningenwaarde, was the epicenter of the protests. Van Rhodeaerde delivered a fiery speech: *"We Batavians did not join Shireroth to be reduced to a prefecture. We are proud of our kingdom, our history, and our king. Let Batavia become a protectorate so that we may retain our king and our political system!"*

The atmosphere was both determined and peaceful, though earlier in the week, incidents occurred, such as the occupation of university buildings and the blocking of the Trans-Benacian Railway. Student groups at the Royal Julius Civilis University gave speeches in support of the monarchy, while at the Nieuwe Universiteit in Irrel, republican flags were raised.

Reactions from Shirekeep and the Royal Palace

So far, the Shirithian government has not officially responded to the protests. However, a spokesperson for the Royal Palace emphasized that King Frederik Alfons des Vinandy "shares the concerns of his people" and is in discussions with Shirekeep to find a solution. "The king stands firmly behind the Batavian people's desire to preserve their unique identity and governance," the spokesperson stated.

Political observers note that the Vinandy family, which holds key positions in both Batavia and Shirekeep, faces a delicate balance. On one hand, they seek to maintain the unity of the empire; on the other, they cannot afford to lose the support of their own people.

What Now?

The question remains whether Shirekeep will accommodate Batavia's demands. A possible compromise could be granting Batavia protectorate status, as suggested by Van Rhodeaerde. For now, however, the government in Shirekeep appears determined to proceed with the reforms.

The coming days will be crucial. If no concessions are made, the protests could escalate further. One thing is clear: the Batavians have made it known that they will not easily relinquish their kingdom and their king.
