The Sanama Ministry of Education is the Council of State department responsible for education policy, schools, high schools, universities, and adult education. It forms a part of the Council of State and is headed by the Secretary for Higher Education, reporting to the Chancellor. The department in its current form was created in 1687 with the passage of the new national constitution and the beginning of the Third Republic, but it traces its origin to the Federal Department of Education, Culture and Research established in 1673. The Secretary for Higher Education directs the operations of the department, assisted by the Secretary for Primary and Secondary Education and a civil service support staff.
