The Sanama Ministry of the Treasury is the department responsible for the national finances, public debt management, revenue collection, regulation of banks, financial institutions, and other related matters. It forms a part of the Council of State and is headed by the Secretary for the Treasury, reporting to the Chancellor. The department in its current form was created in 1687 with the passage of the national constitution and the beginning of the Third Republic, but it traces its origin to the Federal Department of Finance formed in 1673. The secretary directs the work of the department, assisted by several Under Secretaries and Deputy Under Secretaries, with the aim of ensuring the proper payment of revenue to the national government and enforcement of relevant legislation, in conjunction with the Kalisa Sivile. On 1.XII.1692 Secretary for Financial Markets Louise Seward took over responsibility for the policy areas from the Secretary for the Treasury, after being transferred by Chancellor Nur Pinito Caprici from the Department of the Interior.
