Elm Station

Elm Station, located on a headland 2.5 km south of the ruins of Mirkdale in the Warring Islands, is a radio navigation station operated by the Maritime Support Group on behalf of Hunbald & Son, the Nova English Salvage Company, and the Bailiwick of Hempton.

The Elm Station VLF transmitter, constructed during 1681 and operational from 1682 onwards, is an important facility for transmitting orientation signals in the very low frequency range to vessels at sea. Beside this, it is used for transmitting the time signal for the synchronisation and re-calibration of specialist electronic equipment.

In common with the former Tuulersender transmitter of the Imperial Republic operated from shire:MoMA Station Tuulersbýur (Cape Tuuler, Batavia), the antenna system of the Elm Station VLF transmitter consists of three antenna systems with a central mast insulated against ground from which antenna wires run to six grounded ring masts, where they are fixed by insulators. As at former Shirerithian transmitter, three ring masts carry two antenna systems, so there are only 15 ring masts on the site. A further common ground to former Shirerithian transmitter is, that the ring masts of the transmitter are masts of lattice steel with triangular cross section, while the central masts are steel tube masts.

The 15 ring masts of the Elm Station VLF transmitter are 270 metres , and the three central masts of VLF transmitter are 305 metres tall. Their height surpasses therefore the height of the masts of former Tuulersender transmitter nearly exactly of 100 metres (330 ft).
