Herckenburg is the capital of the crown canton Nederburg. The city was previously the capital of the Grand Duchy of Nederburg, which at the time was part of the Batavian Commonwealth. The city is situated on the east flank of Nederburg Mountain, on the river Herck.
In 1675 AN the city came back on the map, as part of the "reconquista" (recapture) of Batavian-Cibola.
History
The city was founded by Roelof van Nederburg, simultaneously with the foundation of the Grand Duchy of Nederburg. Soon the city had to compete with Saragossa, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Aragon. Nederburg and also the city of Herkenburg were less important after the bomb attack by Roelof van Nederburg.
During the time that Batavian-Cibola was transformed into the Grand Duchy of South Batavia, the city lost more and more prestige. It was still a regional capital in Saxony, but the city lost that status when Jingdao was founded.
When Cibolian Jingdao ended, the city disappeared from the map. Only in 1675 AN, at the "reconquista" (recapture) or Batavian-Cibola as part of Helderbourgh, the city appeared on the map again. Nederburg was re-established as the Crown Canton of Helderbourgh, with Herckenburg restored as the capital.
Geography
The city was originally built on a hilly peninsula surrounded by the river Herck, but outgrew natural boundaries by the 17th century. A number of bridges have been built to allow the city to expand beyond the Herck.
Herckenburg is built on very uneven ground. An elevation difference of up to 60 metres exists between the inner city districts on the Herck (Oude Midden) and the higher ones (Kirchenfeld and Denderhaven).
Government
For the time being, the city is directly governed by the governor of the Crown Canton Nederburg, Gustaaf Westerbeeck. This has everything to do with the reconstruction of the city and the Crown Canton. Local elections are expected to be organized by 1680 AN at the latest, with the mayor and city council elected.
Places of interest
Among the places of interest are:
- Paleis Kirchenfeld, the restored residence of the Grand Duke of Nederburg, currently a private residence of Arkadius Frederik Gustavus des Vinandy.
Transport
The rebuilding of Nederburg is currently in full swing. A railway line has already been laid between Fergustein and Herckenburg. And Denderhaven Airport is operational.
