Law enforcement in Sanama (Third Republic) is primarily a cantonal matter. All cantons therefor maintain cantonal police forces with varying responsibilities. Many cantons also have communal police forces, especially in urban areas, while rural areas are often patrolled by cantonal police. Most cantons, with some exceptions, name their law enforcement agency the Public Safety Service or Department of Public Safety. This is to emphasize the primary role of the police being service to the public. Through federal coordination, all cantons have independent supervisory agencies responsible for holding the police forces in the canton accountable for any overstep in their legal authority.
