Named after the mentor and caretaker of the primary god of the Stripping Path and the king of satyrs, Silenus is the third of the moons of Thalassa.
North Polar Regions

The North Polar Regions of Silenus are defined by a fractured and uneven ice cap broken by exposed rock, shallow basins, and uplifted highlands. Unlike a smooth polar sheet, the ice here is disrupted by fissures and irregular margins, with darker terrain emerging through the frozen cover in broad patches. In the northwest, the broken upland zone known as the Thyron Marches forms one of the most rugged transition regions, where ice gives way to worn and exposed ground. Across the northern interior, the elevated ridge system called the Pappos Ridge rises above surrounding terrain as a continuous line of higher ground, while farther east the boundary zone of the Nysion Verge marks a shift into more fragmented and uneven terrain.
Beneath and along the edge of the polar cap, several large enclosed basins interrupt the surrounding surface. The most prominent of these is the Phoros Basin, a broad depression whose darker interior contrasts sharply with the lighter polar ice. The northern region therefore presents a layered landscape of ice, exposed highlands, and enclosed basins, where erosion, fracture, and long-term surface processes have created a terrain that appears both ancient and unsettled.
Equatorial Regions
Running across the center of this region is the vast canyon system known as Seilen Chasma, a deeply incised feature that cuts across the equatorial belt and acts as the primary structural divide of the moon. Along its margins, transitional corridors such as Via Komos trace natural routes through the surrounding terrain, while adjacent regions like the Oinara Plain and the enclosed depression of Mantikon Hollow provide zones of relative stability within the otherwise fractured landscape.
To the east, the terrain becomes more varied and broken, with major features such as the circular Erythron Crown and the adjacent volcanic structure Patera Bromion dominating the region. The transitional zone known as the Dionax Reach extends outward from these features, while the boundary region called the Koryth Threshold marks a shift into more heavily disrupted terrain. Across the lower eastern belt, the fracture network of the Fossae Ampelion further divides the landscape into segmented ridges and troughs.
The equatorial regions are therefore defined by movement and division: broad plains broken by deep chasms, enclosed basins, and evolving surface deposits. The Silenion Expanse, Seilen Chasma, Via Komos, Oinara Plain, Mantikon Hollow, Erythron Crown, Patera Bromion, Dionax Reach, Koryth Threshold, and Fossae Ampelion together form a complex and dynamic central geography.
Southern Polar Regions
The Southern Polar Regions of Silenus are brighter and more varied than much of the equatorial surface. Broad frozen plains, fractured polar deposits, and broken ice margins extend across the southern high latitudes, with darker rocky uplands and cratered ground rising through the frozen cover in several sectors. The southern cap is irregular rather than continuous, with embedded dark masses, shattered ice zones, and enclosed basins producing a highly broken polar landscape.
The transition from the south polar ice to the darker middle latitudes is especially complex. Ice fills low basins, spreads around exposed ridges, and breaks into broad floe-like masses and fractured sheets near the polar margin. In the southeastern high latitudes, bright disturbed terrain and pale plume-like deposits surround several pits and vents, suggesting localized cryovolcanic or geothermal activity within the frozen southern zone. The south combines permanent ice, fractured crust, and active-looking polar disruption within a single broad glaciated region.
Unusual Qualities
Silenus is known for faint nocturnal luminescence along parts of Valles Silenii, the largest single, continuous canyon system anywhere in the Atos System. During periods of thermal contraction and crustal stress, exposed crystalline seams within the canyon walls are thought to produce weak triboluminescent flashes and electrostatic glow. In the same region, certain wind-cut mineral pillars have earned a reputation as “whispering stones,” producing low harmonic tones when katabatic winds pass through narrow fractures and clustered rock openings.
