Remuel Lester Callaghan, better known as Captain Callaghan was a Southbatavian-born Calbain naval officer, pirate and war hero. Born around 1570 during the Southbatavian era, Callaghan learned the trade of piracy from the sailors of Barbarije. He moved to the newly founded St. Edward colony on what is now Calbion island in 1597 where he purchased a ship and established himself as a comodity trader and smuggler who assisted the arriving colonists in their quest to take control of the island and unifying the Calbain tribes under the leadership of Prince Jack I for his efforts, the Prince granted him a letter of marque and reprisal. Captain Callaghan took to raiding small vessels, largely from Alexandrian and Natopian merchants, but occasionally also attacked Southbatavian Saxon ships. In 1598, the Southbatavian government was nearing a conflict with the Natopians over alleged homophobia from the Southbatavian emperor Mordechai Ben Erasmus. Callaghan made a deal with the government to only attack ships from hostile nations in return for being left alone by the Southbatavian navy. In the next year, a large Natopian trading ship was attacked, plundered and sank with all Natopian soldiers being killed, escalating tensions between Natopia and Calbion. Shortly after, Callaghan and his crew, led by his flag ship the Black Dragon, attacked a Natopian village which happened to be a holiday resort largely frequented by queer people, several of those were killed by the pirate force. This tied in to the already existing claims of homophobia, and the attacks triggered a short war between Calbion and Natopia, in which a Natopian warplane crashed in the Calbain capital of Pentyre.
The Calbain government officially denounced Callaghans's actions and brought an end to piracy. The manner in which they did this was by turning Callaghan's fleet into the official Calbain navy. The Captain was granted the right to colonise the island of Newydd Pentyre (also known as penguin island) for the Calbain government. The island was later lost in the Southbatavian-Alexandrian war but to this day is home to the Callaghan Momument.
Callgahan went on to serve the Calbain government until his death in 1607 when his ship crashed on a reef near the coast of Corum. Callaghan has many children by many wives.
