The Starlight Awards of Merit and Achievement, commonly known as the Starlight Awards or the Starlights, are awards for artistic and technical merit for the film industry. They are bestowed annually by the National Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (NAMPAS) in recognition of excellence in film and cinema achievements as judged by the voting members of NAMPAS. Established in 1698 AN in Punta Santiago, Alduria, these awards are considered to be the most prestigious film awards in Nouvelle Alexandrie.
The major award categories are presented during a live-televised ceremony out of Punta Santiago, that is typically held in in the third or fourth months of the Anno Nortone year. The 1st Starlight Awards were held in 1699 AN. The second ceremony, in 1700 AN, was the first one to be televised nationally by the National Broadcasting Corporation.
History
- Created by the Academy in 1698 AN to recognize the best in their business and a means to fundraise for the organization and its fund to care for young and starting film artists, actors, etc.
- The Awards grow during its first give years from a small industry gathering to a full-fledged PR bonanza, featuring all of the industry's major film stars, directors, and artists.
- The Actor's Strike of 1718 and the cancelled Starlight Awards because the trade dispute tore the trade association apart
- Low ratings years, awards were not very well seen, 1720-1725
- Big blockbuster hits start to come back, but recession of 1726 hit industry hard. Ratings and quality of shows begins to improve in 1727 to compete as NBC threatens to drop awards and no other channel wanted them.
- Awards now are very well-viewed and received, hosts are usually comedians or artist of note, a display of glitz, glamour, and celebrity
National Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences
- NAMPAS - private trade association composed of professionals from across Nouvelle Alexandrie's entertainment sectors, oversees the nomination and voting processes for the awards.
- Membership to NAMPAS is considered prestigious and is extended to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in their respective fields.
