The Strait of Vegno Bridge (Vegnese: Ponte sullo Stretto di Vegno) is a bridge built from the region of Caponord to Falange, giving a passage between the continental territories of Vegno and the island of Falange, where the important city of Sancrus is located.

The Project was a proposal of the political party of Forza Vegno, which started the project under the Zarrella I Cabinet, completing it 6 years later. The estimate in terms of costs and timing were very large, but the benefits are enormous both from the point of view of civil connections and for the exchange of goods.

The bridge is made up of to two double-lane carriageways for the transit of cars, and also a series of two-way tracks to allow the passage of trains. at first the railway speed is limited, for safety reasons, and then increased over time.

History

The official inauguration during the first half of the year 1713 AN in the presence of the most important local representatives.

The official start of the bridge project was sanctioned by Law 1, promulgated in the course of 1707 AN by the Zarrella Government, demonstrating the full commitment of the Government in the realization of this great public work.

The first contract was awarded to Mancuso Cementi Vegnesi S.p.A.,who will take care of the start of the works during 1707 after the verification of compliance with all environmental conditions by a committee and by the minister of the environment.

The works continued for the duration of the first government, except for fear of a blockade due to the elections of 1709. The results of the elections were however comforting for the government in office, which continued to allocate funds to complete the project, which saw completion in 1713 AN, after 6 years of construction.

The official inauguration took place in the first quarter of 1713 AN, responding to a great expectation on the part of the citizens, especially from the regions of Caponord and Falange.

Criticisms

Supporters see the bridge as a huge job-creation scheme and a boost for tourism. However, opponents question the priority of the bridge, claiming that if the government concentrated instead on making Vegno's roads more efficient, drivers would be able to reach the coast more quickly at a fraction of the bridge's cost.

Others believe that the bridge is quite unnecessary, since the local economy is already good. Alternatively, a much cheaper revamping of the current structures is claimed to be sufficient (for instance, the ferry lines on the Falange island side are now accessible by trucks only by driving through very narrow streets, which are a tight bottleneck for transport). Another argument against the bridge is the poor state of the transport infrastructure.

There are also concerns about the environmental impact of the bridge summoned by I Verdi, its actual feasibility, and its resistance to earthquakes.
