The Golden Cormorant is the highest film award given annually to the best film at the Mhazar Vegnese Film Festival, held every August in the city of Mhazar, in Vegno. It was introduced with the first edition of the festival in 2025. This award is the last one announced on the Festival night, and it is considered the most prestigious.

History

The award was established when the Mhazar Vegnese Film Festival was founded, with the aim of identifying and celebrating each year the film that best represents cinematic excellence, both in terms of content and form. The name and symbol of the award—a cormorant, the national animal of Vegno—evoke the link with the country's cultural identity and the free and proud spirit of visual art.

The Golden Cormorant is awarded to only one film per edition, chosen from among the works in competition by an international jury composed of directors, actors, critics, and prominent figures in the film industry.

The trophy

The Golden Cormorant trophy consists of a golden statuette depicting a stylized cormorant, with elegant and minimalist lines, resting on a square golden base with the words “GOLDEN CORMORANT” engraved on the front. The sober but distinctive design recalls the national symbols of Vegno and is designed to convey prestige, sobriety, and visual strength.

The trophy has a matte gold finish and has become an iconic object over the years, celebrated by national and international authors and filmmakers.

Awarding

The Golden Cormorant is awarded during the festival's closing ceremony, at the end of a competitive selection process among the films in competition. The decision is made by the official jury, which may justify its choice with a public critical note. In the event of a tie or shared decision, the award may be given to two films, although the usual practice is to award it to only one.
