The Storting (Uppmanlandic: Stortinget [ˈstûːʈɪŋə]; literally "the Great Thing") is the supreme legislature of Uppmanland, established as such in 1757 by the constitution, and consists of 449 members representing the people. A great assembly for all the provinces of the Uppmanlandic-speaking people of the coast south of Amaland had existed for hundreds of years before, albeit informally. The legislature is elected every three years by all oath-bound citizens, with each province apportioned seats according to its share of the population. The assembly is led by a speaker (Uppmanlandic: talman) and four vice speakers (Uppmanlandic: nästtalman). The Storting is vested with supreme legislative, judicial and executive powers in the areas delegated to it by the constitution. When legislating, the Storting operates as a regular legislature. Its judicial and executive functions are delegated to separate committees, with appeal available in certain circumstances to the full membership of the Storting.

Representation

Each traditional province is represented in the Storting. Seats are apportioned proportionally according to population, using the largest remainder method. Each province is guaranteed at least three seats. The cities are included in the traditional provinces, where Ramstad is divided between Aspeland and Nyland.

Committees

The Storting is divided into XX committees, deliberating on and giving recommendations to the full house on legislation and resolutions. Two of the committees have different scopes. The Committee on Government Affairs serves as the executive government on the federal level, whose chairperson is the effective prime minister of Uppmanland. The Court Committee functions as the supreme court of the country, whose chairperson is an appointed judge with the sole function of presiding over judicial proceedings and deliberations.
