[edit] [purge] Template documentation

This template produces an infobox for an ethnic group, a people, or a diaspora community. It is a wrapper around {{Infobox}}.

Every parameter is optional. A parameter left blank is not displayed, and each section header (Total population, Regions with significant populations, Languages, Religion, Related ethnic groups) appears only when at least one of its parameters is filled.

Note: transcluding this template automatically places the article in Category:Peoples.

Usage

Insert the following at the top of the article and fill in what applies:

{{Infobox ethnic group
| group            =
| native_name      =
| native_name_lang =
| flag             =
| flag_caption     =
| image            =
| image_caption    =
| total            =
| total_year       =
| total_source     =
| total_ref        =
| popplace         =
| region1          =
| pop1             =
| region2          =
| pop2             =
| region3          =
| pop3             =
| languages        =
| religions        =
| related_groups   =
| footnotes        =
}}

Parameters

  • group: the name of the group, shown as the infobox title. Defaults to the page name when omitted.
  • native_name: the group's own name for itself, in its own language. Endonyms are separated by commas.
  • native_name_lang: the language the native name is written in.
  • flag: a flag or emblem, given as a complete image link including size, for example [[File:Flag of Example.png|300px]]. A bare filename will not work.
  • flag_caption: a caption for the flag.
  • image: a second image, below the flag, in the same complete-image-link form.
  • image_caption: a caption for that image. The parameter caption may be used instead, but has effect only when image_caption is empty.
  • rawimage: raw image wikitext. When set, it replaces image.
  • total: the total population of the group. The parameters population and pop are older names for the same field; only the first one filled is used.
  • total_year: the year the total refers to, shown in parentheses after it. The parameter poptime is an older name for the same field.
  • total_source: how the figure was arrived at. This parameter accepts only census, estimate, or est, which render as "census" and "est." Any other text is silently discarded, so put a fuller description in footnotes instead.
  • total_ref: a reference for the total, placed immediately after it.
  • genealogy: a figure including those of ancestral descent, where that is counted separately from the total.
  • total1 to total3: further population totals on their own rows, each with matching total1_year (used as the row label), total1_ref, and total1_source parameters. The source parameters take the same three keywords as total_source.
  • popplace: a description of where the group is concentrated, shown under the regional header. The parameter regions does the same thing, and if both are given both are displayed.
  • tablehdr: an additional free-form header row above the regional breakdown.
  • region1 to region40: the label for each row of the population breakdown, conventionally a country given as {{team flag|Nation}}. A final row labeled in plain text, such as "Other nations", is common practice.
  • pop1 to pop40: the population figure paired with each region, with ref1 to ref40 for references. Note that the regional header appears only if popplace, regions, or region1 is filled, so a breakdown that starts at region2 will render without its header.
  • pop_embed: raw wikitext, for a population block the numbered parameters cannot express.
  • languages: the languages the group speaks, usually as {{Unbulleted list|...}}. The parameter langs is an older name, and if both are given both are displayed, so use only one.
  • religions: the group's religions, in the same form. The parameter rels is an older name and behaves the same way, displaying both if both are given.
  • related_groups: other peoples the group is related to, as wikilinks. The parameters related and related-c also feed this field and are likewise additive rather than alternative.
  • footnotes: a note below the infobox, conventionally an italicized sentence naming the census or estimate the figures come from.

Example

A live rendering of this template can be seen at Caputian diaspora. The example below is not transcluded here, because transcluding the template would place this documentation page in Category:Peoples alongside actual peoples.

{{Infobox ethnic group
| group            = Example people
| native_name      = Exempli, Exemplares
| native_name_lang = Alexandrian
| flag             = [[File:Flag of Example.png|300px]]
| total            = 12,480,000
| total_year       = {{AN|1758}}
| total_source     = census
| popplace = Chiefly the northern provinces, with older communities along the coast.
| region1          = {{team flag|Nouvelle Alexandrie}}
| pop1             = 7,240,000
| region2          = {{team flag|Constancia}}
| pop2             = 3,100,000
| region3          = Other nations
| pop3             = 1,140,000
