HEARTBREAK IN EXTRA TIME: SANPANTUL STEALS GOLD FROM SHIREROTH’S HANDS

KIPEI — It is difficult to put into words the injustice that unfolded at Kipei Stadium. Shireroth deserved to lift the Tea Cup Trophy. Instead, we leave with silver and a bitter taste.

From the first whistle, Shireroth controlled the tempo. Charlotte Hall opened the scoring in the 29th minute, her ninth of the tournament, proving once again that she is the undisputed queen of this competition. For forty minutes, the final looked settled.

But Sanpantul, aided by a home crowd of 88,000 and questionable refereeing decisions in the final stages, refused to accept defeat. Their equaliser in the 71st minute came after a period of sustained pressure that bordered on intimidation. The referee allowed contact that would have been penalised anywhere else.

Extra time was a war of attrition. In the 104th minute, a controversial solo run down the byline led to the decisive goal. Replays suggest the ball went out of play prior to the crossback, but no VAR review was offered. Shireroth pushed forward with everything we had, but fortune favoured the hosts.

Sanpantul are champions. Congratulations to them, though we know the better team did not win. The trophy may remain in Çakaristan’s custody, but the moral victory—and the true quality of football—belongs to Shireroth. Next year, we return. And next year, we take what is ours.
