Port Diana is one of the largest cities in New Brittania, historically it is famed as home of the great New Brittanian ship yards which have produced many notable ships including the SS Indomitable and the HMY Singapore. Although the civilian population of the city is relatively small, nearly everyone from the city and the surrounding area is involved in the ship building industry in one way or another. Not all areas of the dockyards are open to the public, restricted areas under military guard exist including a particularly large factory in the port itself containing a secret construction nicknamed "Harald's Bane."

History

First being reached by New Brittanian's shortly after the founding of the Kingdom, the island of Port Diana was soon settled and became home to the port town. Following increased investment in the navy following the Circum Raynor war, the town soon thrived and within months of the war ending the first New Brittanian ships were being launched from Port Diana. These ship included the HNBMS Glory (the ship which transported the first people to the Micras North Pole), the SS Indomitable (Micras' largest cruise liner) and the HMY Singapore (the Royal Yacht of His Majesty King Jeremy II.)

Historically the town is also a main trade route for ships traveling from UCS and Shalta towards the home islands, consequently the port is often busy with both people and cargo moving in and out constantly. The town is also home to the secret B-1 Skimmer or "Harald's Bane" project which has produced a new secret piece of equipment for the New Brittanian armed forces.

Geography

The city was built around a natural harbour, consequently the streets tend to curve in line with the coast. The area is also home to the delta of the River Erawash which flows down from the highlands elsewhere on the island, this means the waterways around the city are tidal making access from the sea tricky at certain times of day. The water does however create a vast variety of wildlife including sea creatures including Dolphins and whales as well as fresh-water creatures such as trout and the rare white cray-fish. The cold climate which being near the north pole does however have an effect on the wildlife on land which is restricted to hardy creatures such as reindeer and bears.

Transportation

  • As previously mentioned the City is a port and sea travel is consequently very popular amongst visitors to the area. However a small airstrip does exist with flights to the mainland on a daily basis for those without "sea legs."
  • All basic modes of transport such as by car, bus and bike are all availible as well as by train which is often used as a way of moving goods from the dock to the mainland.

Famous Attractions

  • The dock facilities themselves attract visitors who are interested in the ship building, features include the slip-ways and tours of the factories.
  • The dry dock of SS Indomitable is a unique attraction to the area, thousands of people flock to the city each year to gaze at the vast dock-gates and the vast slip-way from which the great vessel was launched.
  • Visitors can also see the ancient lifeboat house from where the Port Diana lifeboat is launched in the event of emergencies at sea. This facility is run by the Royal New Brittanian Lifeboat Institution (RNBLI)

Famous Produce

  • Those rich enough to afford a private yacht often purchase them from Port Diana as the town's ships are famed for their high quality and safety.
  • Visitors can also purchase a collection of scale models of notable ships launched from the city.

Cultural Tips

  • The national, infact only, religion in New Brittania is Christianity. Consequently many people go to church on Sundays and guests are likely to be expected to do so also.
  • It is considered disrespectful to touch a ships golden bell which is often on the deck near the bow. This is because the bells are used as rallying points during times of crisis.
